This is one of those very few movies, whose plot was known to almost every Indian who knows Hindi/ English, thanks to media. Or maybe that was what producers wanted? my initial response after reading about movie and watching interviews was okay! I was not keen at spending money for this, because it looked like a movie with a social message. Last time I ventured for similar movie was a Salman Khan starrer, it looked as if whole movie was made against a message instead of making a movie with a message.
I am Akshay Kumar fan (MY REVIEW IS NOT PREJUDICED) and wanted to watch the movie, trailer was not appealing, so were the songs and set up, I was wondering what are they going to do for 150 minutes with one message. To add to my misery, on Friday I read review on website of one of the news channels - Critic on this portal had blasted the movie, he was very unhappy and wanted the movie to be flushed . Dil toot gaya tha yaar.
In the evening I read another review, that also declared movie as a failure to entertain. This gentleman had written heavy English; I am desi guy and fail to understand what is the use of writing review of hindi movie in OXFORD. I could not understand half of sentences, and got to see lot of new English words. That’s when I felt something is wrong, if someone is not able to express his views for Hindi movie in common man’s language, I am sorry does he really understands hindi movies . I thought of giving a shot to the movie.
We saw late afternoon show 15:30 on Sunday and it was housefull. Mostly family and youngsters had turned up at theatre. This is a comedy movie based out of real India(Small districts and below). Director Shree Narayan Singh is the same man who has edited so many hits for Akshay(Special 26, Baby and Rustom), his skill set needs no words, one has to experience it. Toilet is a class apart . It has a simple story stitched with humor and excellent plot(thanks to writer Siddharth and Garima). Director has picked up star cast carefully, special mention about Sudhir Pandey, saw him in a good role after long time. Anupam Kher also had a sunny cameo, oops funny cameo. Bhumi Pednekar has done full justice to her role, artists like her give confidence to viewers like us that other than stars there are enough of good performers who can carry movie on their shoulder. That reminds Me of Dumm Laga ke, what a movie it was. Toilet and Dum laga ke has a similarity, watch the movie and reply to me!
Akshay Kumar, less I say is better. He was good as usual, but there are high points in the movie. Way he dances on his wedding, his giggling after falling in love, his innocent face in midst of fight between his wife and father and his aashiqui for love. One has to watch the movie to feel it. Divyendu is another class actor, (pyar ka panchnama wala) who has a good role in the movie. His comic timing is excellent.
Movie is super amazing in the first half, you cannot stop laughing, 2nd half is little stretched and 10 -15 minutes are kind of boring. Given the kind of movies are being made these days, this is still better. Music is unique as one may not enjoy the lyrical aspect but during the movie, songs are placed in such a manner that you kind of like it. Full credit of the director and editor for this. While everyone holds government responsible for failure of schemes and corruption, by way of movie writer has also highlighted that in some cases public is also equally responsible for failure of social schemes. Movie has a special mention about Swach Bharat Abhiyaan and in last 15 -20 minutes they have tried to link the movie plot with that scheme, that’s where it gets little slow and unrealistic to be very frank. But critics are critics they ignored the full movie and concentrated only on 10 -15 minutes which were not so well placed. One needs to have lot of guts to give 10 -15 minutes to a social message in a commercial movie. Hopefully this will leave a positive impact on the public which does not have toilet at home. Take out time and watch this movie at a theatre near you. Jai hind!
