About the book
Marking the occasion of 400th anniversary of Christopher Columbus discovering America, World's Columbian Exposition was conducted in 1893 in Chicago. 74 intellectuals from US were given 33 topics by American press association on May 1st, 1893 to envision future of USA in 1993. The 213 page book (minus appendix) is a rare opportunity to read views of so many minds in a single place. These 74 comprises people from disparate backgrounds: politicians, poets, attorneys, business, journalists and majority of them are migrants.
The theme is “Americas in 1993” as written in 1893
The book was written based on then existing social conditions & challenges, involvement of government, phase of progress etc. The book should not be read from
a) who wrote,
b) what was written.
But, should be looked from perspectives point of view
Connectivity & Internet was too tough to envision 120 years back, this makes many of the predictions look dumb or silly. But if the same are looked without the phenomenon Internet, it is interesting.
