Director

James Cameron’s ‘Titanic’ the winner of 11 Academy Awards is a romantic action drama. The crew and especially the director himself have put in a lot of hard work. He has moved from one scene to the other smoothly and not forced anything that will break the storyline. For any director it is hard to direct thinking of the big budget of over $200 million and that the movie HAS to be success and too right it was. The hard work paid off.

The Plot

The film begins in the present where a man called Brock Lovett with his team are on the search for the remains of the famous ship ‘Titanic,’ since he wants to find a valuable gem necklace. His team searches underwater and find an old safe, which they bring to the surface. They assume that the necklace must inside there since valuables are kept locked away. However, after breaking into it their prediction turns out to be wrong. They discover a drawing of a young girl posing on a couch with her expensive necklace around her neck. The very necklace they are on the lookout for.

Lovett finds the drawing useful as he goes on to Television and broadcast the drawing in order of someone to recognize the girl and come forward with information. Lovett receives a phone call and a woman called Rose claims that she is the girl in the drawing. She is brought to the ship where she begins her life story.

The story travels back Southampton, April 12th, 1912 where hundreds of people are boarding the largest ship made, ‘Titanic,’ whilst hundreds are there to see of their relative and friends. Rose arrives with her mother and Fiancé Cal in a black car. She is wearing that famous hat from Celine Dion’s,’ My Heart Will Go On,’ which was sung for Titanic.

The next scene takes up to a pub where Jack and his Italian friend are playing poker against two Russians, who have placed their Titanic tickets on the bet. After, the serious game Jack turns out as the winner and grabs the tickets. Jack and his Italian friend run for the ship before the ship departures.

The story moves on, when Jack sees Rose for the first time on the upper deck. He falls in love instantly with her. His friend tells him he has no choice but to forget the girl. He is poor and she is extremely rich but Jack is determined to let nothing get in his way. At a posh dinner party Rose becomes sick of Cal’s behavior and walks away from the dinner table. She rushes outside where she goes out to the railings on the edge on the ship and climbs over them. Her hands are behind her holding them but just as she lets go she can drown and even die. Jack was smoking when Rose ran past him, he realizes she is upset and runs over to her and tries to calm her down. Finally, he persuades her to climb back onto the ship and once she’s over she falls down. Jack immediately kneels down to help her but at that very moment Cal appears with his servant and thinks that Jack was trying to assault his fiancé. Rose tells him he is wrong and that Jack was the person who saved her not assaulted her, but the servant is far from convinced.

Jack reveals his love to Rose but she doesn’t seem interested at first. Her life is in a mess since she is going to marry someone she doesn’t love. Cal presents Rose with a gift. You may have guessed it; it’s the necklace that Lovett is searching for. It had a beautiful blue stone in the middle with diamonds around it.

Rose begins to have feelings for Jack and asks him to make a drawing of her with the necklace on, and just the necklace. He agrees. From here they begin to get closer and closer and yes true love is apparent. Cal is extremely jealous of Rose’s interest towards Jack. To him, he is only a poor young man with no money at all. Things hot up as the ship heads for an iceberg that breaks the bottom of the ship as water pours in enormously at the lower class department where Jack lives. None of the passengers are told that the ship is going to drown until they have to be told, starting with the upper class first. Since rich get everything first, they are supplied with life jackets and lifeboats. However, Rose refuses to take a jacket. She is going to her love, Jack. The scenes that follow are immensely emotional and heart breaking. To sum everything else up as the credits are playing Celine Dions song is played to add more sympathy. The audience actually feels as if they were there through this disaster.

The Performances

Both Leonardo Di Caprio and Kate Winslet did a great job. Their roles were very tough yet they worked their best and entertained nicely. Not only that but on screen they suited each other.

Even though, Billy Zane was the villain trying to do all he could to separate both lovers he too performed very well. His accent suited his posh character and his expressions made him look like he was made for the role.

Other performances like the Captain played by Bernard were just as good as the main 3 characters. The hardest part for an actor is to drive something that is going to crash. Even thought computer effects were used, Bernard performed as if it was real life and the people were going to crash. The audience actually feels they are on the ship as well.

THIS IS DEFINATELY ONE BLOCKBUSTER TO REMEMBER!
