Ok I know I am late… but I am sure you’d love reading the review, coz some things are beyond time. Like feelings.
Titanic is titled after the GREATEST ship ever that sailed over water in the history of ships. Titanic means colossal / giant. The word describes the ship that took with it over 3000 people on its first journey. Technically read people said, the ship would NEVER sink. It was believed to be an unsinkable ship that would mark its name in the history. And so it did…
The movie is about Jack dawson (Leonardo DiCaprio) and Rose DeWitt Bukater (Kate Winslet) who meet over the ship and fall in love instantly.
Rose is a girl of aristocracy, well mannered and is traveling by 1st class with her mother and fiancé Cal Hockley (Billy Zane). Her mother wishes her to marry this rich millionaire for the fact that her father’s left them under debts and her mother doesn’t wish to let go off the aristocratic standards she has lived with all her life. So the 17 years old Rose is bound under the strict and fake norms of aristocracy, where a woman is a commodity, bought and sold in marriage, Where all her life she has been curbing her desires. But now she wishes to break off. She wishes to end her life to get the freedom her soul desires. She wants to live a life of true happiness where luxury is not as important as a simple smile is.
Jack on the other hand is a complete fun freak. He is a street smart guy who wins the ticket to The Titanic in a Poker game. He is traveling by 3rd class. He lives in the present, is poor and lives a nomadic life. He is widely traveled and is an artist, a painter.
The two meet when Rose attempts to jump into the water to end her life and break herself free of the clutches of hypocrisy that she has lived under all her life. Jack sees her and comes to her. He stops her from doing it, but without even asking her not to jump. All that he says is you jump, I jump too. Call that instant love, crush or love at first sight… I believe its care. Something every girl craves for.
And they keep meeting, again and again and again. Gradually they discover each other. They are different, in each sense of the word. She is quite, he is loud. She is submissive, he is bold. She is classy, he is classless. She is bound with clutches, he is a free man. She is well mannered, he hates being manner full. But there is a similarity, above it all… they fall in love.
They keep meeting, hiding from the eyes of Rose’s family and friends. She loves being free. The innocent girl sees life in him. She feels alive.
Until it all ends with The Titanic’s sudden hit with an ice burg, and its sinking. They go down into the water, along with 1500 more people. And Jack dies of the ice cold water of the Atlantic Ocean. While he makes sure Rose survives, and she is carried in a life saving boat to the shore. She lives on, gets married, has children and then comes back as an old lady of 102 years, to tell the tale of the man who taught her to live in just a few days.
Some things I fail to forget about the film….
”I’m flying”…When Rose makes up her mind to give up all that she has in exchange for Jack’s company, she comes to him. He is standing on the deck of the ship. When she tells him her decision, he does the best thing any man can do to her woman… give her wings to fly in the glory of his love! They stand at the end of the ship’s deck, high on the railings, holding hands, with arms wide spread, with nothing else in front of the eyes but the Ocean and the Sky. Love is like that, it gives you all the freedom of the world to DREAM and believe in your dreams.
”I’m not an idiot… I know how the world works…''Jack expresses his live to Rose, but its not that he is living in a hallucination. He knows the differences between him and her. And that’s where he says, that he understands he has just 10 bucks in his pocket, but he still loves her and doesn’t think anyone can love her more. It's true, love is beyond the cruel realities of life. It’s another world. It’s beyond the material matters. It exists even where there’s nothing. It’s above luxuries and pleasures, it’s about just one thing…Love!
”I want you to paint me wearing this… Only this…''A scene which created sensations in our Indian audiences, every one discussed how much of Kate Winslet’s body did they get to see. But alas it’s not about Kate, it’s about Rose. And her belief in this man she met only 2 days back, her passion to make him draw her, her first expression of love for him, and his respect for her as a woman beyond her body. The Heart Of The Ocean, a very expensive heart shaped pendent of blue stone, that Cal gifted Rose, but she leaves it in his safe before going away with Jack, along with her nude sketch wearing ‘only’ it, as a symbol of all that Cal wanted out of her… the wealth and her body.
”Spit”…hahaha, and the girl begins to break away… Jack tries to teach his gross ways to Rose, who could never believe someone could actually do something that gross. He stands with her and teaches her to SPIT, as far as she can. Sounds yucky? Try to read the deeper symbols. The little girl inside Rose tries to free herself off the clutches of hypocrisy. She wins over him, her spit goes farther than his… hahaha.
”Promise me, you’ll never let go…I promise, I’ll never let go”While Jack and Rose float above water and Rose realizes that “it is getting quieter” meaning people are dying, she wishes to bid Jack farewell, for she believes they would die too. But Jack tells her that there would be no good byes and gives her hope that they would survive and she would live on, move above this tragedy and “bear lots of babies” :) He makes her promise that she would never give up, and this is what makes her pull through. He dies but she makes sure she would “never let go” and is rescued. She lives on, to get married and have babies. While he remains a secret deep down in her heart.
”May I know your name please…Rose Dawson”The name Rose gives in the survivor’s list makes her the widow of a man she never married! The man she hardly knew, who came by as a flash of life and became an inseparable part of her. The power of love…is it?
”A woman’s heart is as deep as the Ocean…''Can I end such a passionate review without the mention of my Greatest passion… The love of my life… My man :) A woman’s heart can hold so much love that a man can never even begin to imagine. She can live for her love and can die for him too. Her heart is a maze, an enigma and a lot more. And if she says she loves you, be glad enough to have got the greatest of things life could offer to you. For her love can get you all that you could desire.
I love you sona, much more than I ever told you. Thanks for being my Jack and teaching me the fact that Life is not a bed of Roses and that I have to be a fighter besides my Soldier...Me by your side IS… WAS… and WILL ALWAYS BE:) (even if u find this too long to even read : P)
