Musings of a movie watcher

I dont know why I am writing a review on advice on watching movies.i had thought that I was not the'advising' type, but then again, I was surprised to see that I have already written two reviews on advice topics! I owe someone an apology for not writing on best 5 vampire movies.but I will do that when im in a'spoooky' mood.right now im in my blues, so heres what I feel about watching movies:

Its not much of an advice.just thoughts that come into my mind when I think about watching movies.and im just going to jot them down.

some movies are to be seen for the beauty, some movies are to be seen for the essence, some movies are forgotten before we have reached half-way home from the theatre, some movies are so bad, they torture us, giving us a glimpse of whats in after-life for the sinners, some movies we cherish - we run and re-run them in our mind, so that the scenes get etched in our memory and we can watch them again and again in our minds eye.

Hero and Amelie are two movies that come to my mind for beauty.the way the two movies radiated with it.it almost leaves a lingering fragrance that you could carry home with you and people would ask stop you on the streets and ask you'hey!did u see that movie'? There might be many areas in the movie leaving much to be desired, but such movies are like ming vases.who buys such vases for what it can store? its bought because the sheer beauty of it brings joy to the soul.

Essence is different and its as diverse as every single individual who watches a movie. For me, I recall the movie'Imaginary Crimes'.something in it appealed to me, God knows what.its just that unknown, unseen factor that enriches you, makes u glad tht u are there, being a part of the triumph and ecstasy, of the sorrow and pathos.have you ever felt that? being in the theatre, watching the movie and suddenly ur heart swells, ebbs and flows.entertainment nirvana.

Some movies hold ur attention from the time it begins till the very end.and when its over.whooosh, it vanishes.not because they were badly made, but just because thats how they are. They belong to all genres and all makes, but usually fall into horror/thriller/action segment - they thrill you, frighten you and at times bore you.they rent a space in ur mind.u remember the thrills, but they  usually dont hire place in ur heart. But then they are not intended to.as long as you are with the movie while its running - u cheer the good guys, hoot the bad ones and feel the adrenaline rush- then the movie has done its part.Kiss of the Dragon is one of my fav action pieces, btw. Jurassic Park and Blade were also cool flicks.

Movies that I cherish are special to me.I saw and re-saw and yet again saw'You got mail'.i close my eyes and see all my favourite scenes laid out before me. Likewise with the last scene in'Castaway', I endured all the torture of the first half, with Hanks talking to his'ball' and all that crap, so that I could see the last scene, with Helen Hunt, ready to sacrifice everything - her life, her family, her honour for her one true love. Which reminded me that some movies have only some good pieces, but they are worth the trouble of going through the entire movie. Thats another thing I remember while watching movies.somewhere I know I will get what im looking for.

One of my pet peeves is going to a suspense thriller and being able to predict every bit of twist they have packaged in it. I remember going for Kasoor with a friend.we were predicting every single thing and laughing our heads off as they came true.during a song Aftab was fishing and my friend said:'if he gets a boot, we leave this theater now!' and sure enough Aftab lifts the rod and there comes the boot.and we burst laughing yet again.(we didnt leave though, for two reasons - the music and Lisa Ray)

I think the main thing about appreciating a movie is to decide what we are going to look for in the movie when we go for it.each movie has a different soul, if we go to a movie knowing what we are looking for and knowing that the movie provides that, then we are in for a good time. If we miss it, we lost it.its like going to a hotel well known for its delightful dosas and ordering vada pav.heck! u were there, but u missed it, buddy!

So that would be my first priority when going for a movie - knowing what im looking for and knowing that I will get it - more or less. I usually read tit-bit of movie reviews im genuinely interested in, so that I know what I can expect when I go to watch it.and of late MS has become one usual place I haunt for that:-)

Of course that doesnt mean that I am oblivious to everything else in the movie.i like movies that are logical, well-made, good screenplays, even if its a tad bit far-fetched or mellowed down, I like it when the cast puts in a good effort.worth ur money.

I remember going for'The Guru' with some friends and I saw this family in front of me - hubby, wife, son and daughter, they left by the time it was intermission.i almost had a good mind to run after them and give the couple a piece of my mind! a beautiful evening spoiled for the entire family, just cause they didnt even check out what they were going to watch that evening. Which takes me to my second point - who you watch a movie with. Whether The Guru can be watched with family might be a matter of debate, but the point is that from that family's point of view it wasnt a movie they wanted to see together.

Who you take with you for a movie is important. When I go for an action movie, I call friends who are action buffs, we sit and whistle and give hi-fives when the hero kicks the bad butts! when I go for a romantic heart-burner, I call someone who loves that kinda movies. We share the sweet moments in silence and love it.Try going to the same movie with people who love such movies and with people who would choke over it.you will realise the difference.

Above everything else, movies are for enjoying.even in the worst movies, there might be some saving grace, something that seems amusing, or moving or thrilling.focus on that, u still will be able to have a good time.(see my reference to Kasoor:-)

I leave the usual advice pieces such as get ur tickets in time, dont forget to buy pop-corn, dont sit with ur legs on the top of the chair before you, dont blow ur nose loudly, blah blah blah.

enuf said.i dont know if what i've written is much of an advice.but it sure is what I feel.its urs to take or leave:-)

Time for me to sign out now.
