NOS A Way To Make Your Ride Go Faster

Everyone has heard about NOS, but not many actually know what it is. The idea of NOS became popular with The Fast and The Furious, and 2 Fast 2 Furious movies. NOS however has existed for a long time, ever since the 80s, people have been using NOS. but then, with the 90s, people looked for more efficient and safe cars. Today, NOS has become more popular, especially among those under the age of 30. Street racing, otherwise known as the underground circuit, demands rice burners(Japanese cars that use NOS).

I have heard a lot of people nowadays throw around the term NOS, without really knowing what it is, or how it works. Well I do, so I would like to share my knowledge with those who are interested in these sorts of things, such as street racing, or just making their car go faster in general.

First off, NOS stands for Nitrous Oxide Systems, this is the name of a company who was one of the pioneers in nitrous oxide injection systems. For the simple purpose of this article however, we will stick with the term NOS. This effect is also known as NOISE(Nitrous Oxide Injection System Experience).

NOS is all about chemistry. Interestingly enough, Nitrous Oxide is N2O(laughing gas). What happens, is that when you inject N2O into the engine’s cylinders, it decomposes according to the reaction

2N2O->2N2+ O2

As you all know, oxygen is required to burn fuel. The extra oxygen present in the cylinders allows for more gasoline to combust, thus producing more torque, which is directly related to horsepower. A single spray of NOS can give a car up to an 80 horsepower boost. Although sprays that are far apart from each other time wise are safe, excess NOS can actually cause your engine life to decrease rapidly. Car engines are built to handle a certain amount of heat, and the use of NOS increases the engines efficiency, but as more fuel is being burnt, more heat is produced, this can in turn cause the engine lubricants to evaporate. The prescribed timing for NOS use, is to use single sprays that are at least 10 minutes apart. Well some may wonder what happens to the N2, well, as N2 is inert, it doesn’t react, or affect the engine in any way.

Although it is the same formula as laughing gas, the cylinders aren’t exactly interchangeable. Do not fit laughing gas in your car thinking that it will give you the same effects as NOS. The difference between the two, is that the N2O in laughing gas is in a gaseous state, and is mixed with air. But why does this matter? Firstly, N2O supports combustion better than air. Nitrous oxide has this effect because it has a higher percentage of oxygen content than the air in the atmosphere. Nitrous oxide has 36% oxygen by weight and air has 23%. Additionally, nitrous oxide is 50% more dense than air at the same pressure. Thus, a cubic meter of nitrous oxide contains 2.3 times as much oxygen as a cubic meter of air. Secondly when NOS is mixed for cars, it is liquefied, and no air is added to the mixture. This is because even if the oxygen is liquefied with the NOS, and the O2 is more volatile. So unlike the N2O which takes a little time to decompose into O2, if O2 is injected directly, it would explode even before reaching the cylinder. This could cause a huge explosion, larger than the regular combustion reaction, and backfire could occur. This basically means that your engine overheats and can even die.

For those speed demons out there, who like the rush, but are not into the technical stuff, it’s fine if you don’t want to know why your machine is going faster, but it’s important to know what all the racers and car buffs are talking about.

Believe it or not, NOS can be bought in India. There are many garages that sell NOS in India. The injection kits can be bought in two types; one is the pre-designed, and the other custom design. The pre-designed kits are imported from Thailand, Malaysia or Indonesia. Injection kits are what contain all the pipes, and valves that carry the NOS from the tank to the engine. It also contains the trigger, and the general wiring and electronics that are required. It contains everything that you need for injecting NOS except the NOS itself. The custom design kits take longer to install as they are made to order, but are more fun, and can deliver more power to your engine. These however also require you to be experienced and knowledgeable about injections to design. The pro racers, and experienced drivers go for the custom designs, whereas those who don’t really know about this stuff go for the pre-designed kits. A pre-designed kit can cost anywhere from Rs/- 80, 000 up to Rs/- 150, 000. This might seem like a meager amount to some of you, but that doesn’t mean that you have to go get NOS in your car as soon as possible. Before you decide to do anything, consider the fact that you are in India, and that NOS could compromise your as well as your car’s health.
