Bengali Thali in E-City, Bangalore
Sep 13, 2006 09:00 PM 9384 Views

As you guys would have heard, half of a Bengali's life is spend in pursuit of maach bhaat, and Dada's maach bhaat has ended this quest in E-City. I work in Infy, and though there are so many eateries within INfy campus, nothing could really satisfy me, because either it is too oily, or it does not taste the way it should. All this changes about a month back when I was introduced to this ramshackle mess, which is been run by a Bengali, and serves authentic Bengali food, just like home made food which is light, tasty and also matches the bengali taste.

Let me get into a little more details:

This is a mess which serves thalis: the variety available are:

  1. Mach er thali - which consist of one bowl of daal(you can take extra at no extra cost), one nice bengali style vegetable - which can be aloo potol, aloo phulkopi(cauliflower), aloo posto(khus khus), shukto(very difficult to describe in english, a mixed vegetable with bitter gourd, supposed to be a starter), aloo bhaja - and the main thing which is maach(fish). Every day you have different choices of fish. Katla or Rohu is constant, but variables are pabda, hisla(rare), chingri(prawns), boyal, pomfret etc. every day you have a minimum choice of 3-4 varities. The fish is very fresh and is cooked in the homely style. The taste is very authentic, I would say it is just like fair home cooking(not brilliant, but during office lunch time you are looking for ok food - atleast I feel happy to have this ok food). Such a thali - you can add on extra fish at extra cost. Jhol extra is at no extra cost. Extra rice is also available, but an average eater does not need extra rice. You can go for a mix of rice and roti. Roti is slightly on the thicker side, so not recommended(after all Bengali's are bhato, rice eater's - so not so great roti is ok with me). Standard maach bhaat thali is Rs. 45, but when you order speciality fish(anything other than Rohu) - you will be charged slightly extra - but it is within Rs. 65 to Rs. 70

  2. Manghsho er Thali - All remains constant, only fish is replaced with Mutton or Chicken. Quantity is ok, generally mutton or chicken quality is quite good, and the best part if cooking is very light and good for the stomach. It is like Home - I keep on repeating this line - because I find this to be the biggest appeal to me - when I compare the rich food which you find around Infy campus. The price is reasonable - it is Rs. 45 to 50 depending on chicken or mutton.

You sometimes get an option of egg curry or omlette, but this is available at off peak hours i.e. after 2:30.

Food is available from 12pm to 8pm, includes lunch and dinner. Lunch continues till 2:30 - but generally by 2 pm the better fish is consumed.

I would recommend this to any one who has a taste for Bengali food. I will tell you this is a less glamourised bangaliana - with no frills.

One warning, it tends to get very crowded if you are late, and you may have to wait. It is a small place and is crowded.

Hygine - is ok, though sort of road side. Me nor my other colleagues whom I have introduced has not  yet complained of upset tummies. Every one I have introduced to this joint has said Abaar khabo(will make repeat visits) and have made repeat visits. So I guess every one has liked what they have got for the price they have paid.

Directions if you want to go there: It is close to Gate no 4 of Infy, very close to the Infy bus stand. There is a management school, it is bang ppposite that. It has a name which I do not remember, but if you ask Bengali  mess, people would be able to show you the place.

Hope every thing is covered
