How Safe Is Crocin Pain Relief or even Crocin?

There is nothing in the world that can tackle excess body temperature/fever better than paracetamol can. Even as regards pain killers, paracetamol is considered safe. However, what many people fail to realize is the negative effects that paracetamol has on the liver.

Paracetamol by itself does not affect the liver, however, its metabolism(metabolism is the bio-chemical modification of chemical compounds in living organisms and cells) is what induces toxicity in the liver. The hepatic enzyme Cytochrome P450 2E1(CYP2E1) system is responsible for the metabolism.  The toxic effect is due to a minor alkylating metabolite(metabolites are products and intermediates of metabolism), called N-acetyl-p-benzo-quinone imine, abbreviated as NAPQI.

At usual doses, the metabolite(a byproduct of metabolism) NAPQI is quickly detoxed and eventually excreted by the kidneys. When a paracetamol overdosage occurs, the NAPQI metabolite causes widespread hepatocyte(see what hepatocytes are in the next paragraph) damage and death.

Hepatocytes make up 60-80% of the cytoplasmic mass of the liver. These cells are involved in protein synthesis, protein storage and transformation of carbohydrates, synthesis of cholesterol, bile salts and phospholipids, and detoxification, modification and excretion of exogenous and endogenous substances.

Therapeutic doses of paracetamol are 350 mg to 500 mg. Hepatotoxicity can occur with an overdosage in an healthy adult, defined as 150mg/kg, which is about 6.5 gm or about 13 Crocin regular(500 mg) tablets, or 10 Crocin Pain Relief(650 mg) tablets. Anything beyond this can rsult in severe liver damage, leading to death. Read on.

In India, Crocin is marketing a new brand extension, Crocin Pain Relief, which is 650 mg of Paracetamol and 50 mg of caffeine. It may be recalled that the company was earlier forced to withdraw Crocin 1000, another brand extension introduced a couple of years ago following instances of increased side effects due to paracetamol overdosage. The market sources feel that Crocin pain relief is nothing but a re-introduction of the same product in a different form.

Paracetamol is a boon when used as advised, and there is no second thought that its pros way outweigh its cons. But when misused, it can be real nasty to the extent of death.use it wisely, and use it only on the advise of your Health Advisor.final words!
