The year of hits and superhits!

ONE OF THE BETTER YEARS

2005 had been a much better year for Malayalam movies. It was almost like a revival for the movie industry which had been suffering losses after losses, with movies in other languages ruling the scene. 2005 certainly had some very poor movies which got what they deserved, there were some movies which managed to leave a huge mark. We could see some new trends and welcome changes, as well as some old tricks working well.

2005 saw the return of one of the most solid actors in the movie industry, Suresh Gopi with two more cop movies Bharat Chandran IPS (supposed to be a sequel to the one of the biggest police movie ever, Comissioner) and The Tiger (a good thriller). As both movies managed to make some impact in the box office, we will be able to see more from this actor, whose career seemed to be almost over at one point of time.

But now one of the strongest personalities on the screen is back, with the same powerful dialogues and action, or may be even better. The most surpising hit may be Kalabhavan's Ben Johnson, even I skipped the movie thinking that it won't finish even a week. But there were the movies like Finger Print and Youth Festival which managed to keep changing theatres in a flash.

SOME GREAT ONES

Two of the best attempt of 2005 came from the legends, Udaayanaanu Thaaram of Mohan Lal and Rajamanikyam of Mamooty. As the first one was somewhat sarcastic, and managed to get the attention of the viewers with some catchy music and comedy, thanks to Sreenivasan, the second one proved to be even more innovative as we saw one of the best actors in a different accent, the movie getting record collections. As long as the expectations are concerned, the movies which completely failed to stay upto it were Bus Conductor and Udayon.

Chaandupottu and Thommannum Makkalum were two laughter trips that I would like to mention. The former one just gave Dileep's career a new life, after two of the worst movies Rasikan and Kochi Rajavu. The year also saw some nice family movies like Achuvinte Amma (depicting the mother - daughter relationship in a realistic manner) which saw a great performance from Meera Jasmine.

It was followed by some highly sentimental ones like Kazhcha and Tanmatra, both directed by Blessy, certainly an extraordinary attempt. Another one which tried to take the sentimental line was Raapakal, which didn't work, while Mamooty's another one Thaskaraveeran proved to be just fine.

A MIXED FEELING

Mohan Lal's Naran proved to be another good one and gave Mohan Lal the first super hit of the year, while Prithviraj managed to get some luck from Anantabhadram, the story of black magic, but the real success was due to some extra ordinary efforts by Manoj K. Jayan and Santhosh Shivan. As long as the other regional movies are concerned, it was Vikram's brilliant effort in Anniyan which made a huge impact in Kerala too, and Ghajini proved to be decent as well.

The much hyped movie Nerariyan CBI didn't click as the other CBI movies of Mamooty, may be the result of being too much technical, confusing and also having a few repetitive factors. This murder mystery had lots of stars, but not much of a great climax nor anything to keep the viewers interested in the movie till the end.

Even if it was a great year for the big stars, the younger generation including Kunchako Boban, Jayasuriya, Jishnu, Siddarth etc didn't have much to cheer about. It was also not the year for Jayaram, while we saw Rehman making a big impact in Malayalam movies even with his supporting roles.

HOPE FOR FUTURE

Even if Navya Nair managed to grab the state award for the movie Kanne Madanguka, the face which comes to mind is Bhavana's, she was impressive in Chaandupottu and Naran, even if her role wasn't too demanding. She was really exceptional in Daivanaamathil. Meera Jasmine and Kavya Madhavan had a pretty good run too. But still the actresses never had that much of a role to do in most of the movies.

Another great thing is that, one of the best comedians, Salim Kumar really did a great job in the serius role Achan Urangatha Veedu, a real good attempt making him the second best actor. The two decisions which can't be questioned were Santosh Sivan winning the best cameraman award and Mohan Lal being the best actor. Hoping to see a better year for Malayalam movies in 2006, with Dileep's Pachakuthira, Suresh Gopi's Lanka and Rasthram, Mamooty's Balram vs Thaaradas and lots more......
