LPG Conversion - Reqd. Documents for endorsement

(Updated Mar 16, 2010 09:59 PM)

Whenever a car is converted to LPG, I mean by the retrofitment i.e. authorised by RTO, below docs. are required. These docs. must be provided by the Garage where the conversion is done. Make sure that the garage is RTO/ Govt. approved for the conversion otherwise endorsement in the RC book will not be done and will be illegal. This process may be same across India as it is CENTRAL MOTOR VEHICLE(CMV) act. But do chk once again with RTO. As there are only 2 types of tank i.e. CYLINDRICAL and TORODIAL(fits in stepny area), below details holds good for both.

  1. Certificate for Compliance to the Central Motor Vehicle rules(This doc. will describe about which type of car is authorised, kit manf. name and for what range of CC i.e 749.25 cc to 1248.75 cc). This doc. is from MINISTRY OF DEFENCE-VEHICLE RESEARCH AND DEV. ESTT, AHMEDNAGAR - 414006

  2. LPG layout plan for the vehicle(MPFI or Carburettor) from manufacturer

  3. Govt. of(State where the conversion is done.) This is a circular from the state govt. authorizing a particular kit manuf. This will also contain - A) name and add. of kit manuf./supplier. B) Name of the testing agency with No. and date. C) Name of the kit. D) Class of Vehicle(Zen, Santro etc) 5) Model for which approval is recorded

  4. Approval from MINISTRY OF COMMERECE AND INDUSTRY PETROLEUM AND EXPLOSIVES SAFETY ORGANISATION(PESO), Nagpur. This doc will have the Valve serial number. The approval comes for a bunch of valve numbers and not individual. For e.g 7601 - 8902. Check if your valve number falls in this range or not.

  5. Govt. of India, DEPT. OF EXPLOSIVES(this doc will contain the tank number which will be fitted in the car, again same like valve number, the approval will be in a bunch. e.g for a tank number 1112 the approval will be in a range of 1083 to 1177

  6. Installation certificate(will contain valve number, tank number and vaporiser number)

  7. Authorisation by the kit manufacturer to the garage for LPG kit usage

  8. Approval of Govt. of Transport Dept. for the garage

All these docs along with Form 49(vehicle conversion form to be filled) are filed together and submitted in RTO along with Original RC book, Insurance and Pollution certificate. Usually prior approval is reqd.(Rs. 50 Challan) for the conversion, but if the prior approval is not obtained then an additional fees of Rs. 100(in Bangalore) is to be given.

Assuming that the prior approval is not taken, a challan of Rs. 150(both original and dup. copy) is also added to these bunch of docs. Submit it and the clerk will give you a date to come and collect the documents. Once the docs are collected on the given date, next date the vehicle should be taken for inspection to the RTO where it is registered. The RTO will inspect the tank number, valve number and vaporiser number physically i.e he will see the numbers on these equipments.

Once these are ok then he will stamp and sign it on the reverse of Form 49 and the whole docs again has to be submitted to RTO. This time no fees is reqd. The clerk will give another date for collecting the RC book, insurance and PUC. Check for the RTO signature as approval.

Happy driving.

*A word of CAUTION.

1. **NEVER TAKE THE HELP OF A MIDDLEMAN/BROKER FOR GETTING THE RTO ENDORSEMENT IN THE RC BOOK. The middleman charges somewhere around Rs.1500 for the doing the above mentioned task. He gives 300-400 to the RTO and rest is in his pocket. Even after paying the amount the person should be physically present while inspection is in progress. When I had been to RTO for endorsing the LPG details in RC book, the broker tried to change my mind but ultimately I could do it for just Rs. 150 rather than Rs. 1500 - 10x savings

  1. In some cases the garage owner will say that the conversion includes RTO charges. But as I said above it dosen’t cost so much and ask him to reduce the RTO charges from the total cost.

  2. With some pain, and some frequest visits to the RTO, this task can be easily accomplished

*Some other details.

*ECON is the LPG tank manufacturer in India.

CYLINDRICAL tank comes in 45 lts and 60 lts - Usually used in sedan where there is enough boot space and can also used in hatchback if the person is ready to compromise on space.

TORODIAL tanks comes in 35.5 lts and 45 lts. This is usually approx. Rs. 2000/- costlier than cylindrical type as manufacturing differs.Carburettor vehicle fitment is cheaper by around Rs. 2000

The cost in Bangalore varies from Rs. 18, 500 - Rs. 21, 500 for cylindrical type and Rs 21, 000 - Rs 25, 000 for Torodial type

Bangalore has now more than 15 LPG dispensing stations. The best bunk for filling the LPG is at Nagpal Garage in Residency Road. Here the quantity is assured. Another good one is in Banshankari. I donot know the name. There is one more new in Hosur Road, near RNS motors

For any complaints email to complaint@icrpc.org. This is a NGO. ICRPC stands for International Consumer Rights Protection Council

*LPG Technician contact details  in Bangalore(the best so far I have seen)

Name: **Pandian,

Contact details:94481 33918 / 080 25733918,

Expertise:Open loop, closed loop, sequential system. Speaks:English, Hindi, Tamil etc, Exp:more than 10 yrs

As of sept16, the ARAI has made a new rule that all fitment should have emissions norms equivalent to Bharat III or Euro III. RTO has become very strict for using close loop system for MPFI vehicles. They do look at the wiring diagram and if not in line then either bribe them to get it endorsed or get the wiring to close loop fitting

*LPG cost in Bangalore as of.

*Mar 16, 2010 - Rs. 34

*LPG Advantages.

*1. Cheaper than petrol, approx 40% less

  1. Cannot be adulterated like petrol.

  2. No major power loss if tuned well and in sequential there is practically no power loss at all

  3. Tanks are stronger than petrol tanks

  4. Very less/no pollution. After using LPG the pollution level of my car has come down to 0.01 from 0.2(petrol)
