ES opened a new garage! A customer named Rahul comes to his garage in pursuit of buying a Second hand vehicle.
ES: Good morning Sir. May I help you?
Rahul: Yes, I actually came here to buy a Second Hand Motor cycle.
ES: Yes Sir we here have many number of Motor cycles for sale. By the way which type would you want to own?
Rahul: I want a bike which is consistent in its mileage and is worth buying.
ES: May I know the price range which you have in your Mind?
Rahul: I want motor cycles ranging between 20, 000-30, 000.
ES: Ok Sir I will show you my collection.

Lets stop right here. The above mentioned dialogues will be in action when ever any person goes to a garage and asks for a second hand motor cycle. Lets suppose that you went to buy a first hand motor cycle. Then the thought in your brain will be ride it sooner or the later. But in the case of buying a Second hand motorcycle your mind will be full of doubts about its mileage, performance, durability and many more. But please don’t fear because ES is here:-) Friends if you are planning to buy a second hand motor cycle then do please read the following points, as they may be useful to you.

Search for Motor Cycles:

If you are fixed on one brand and one motor cycle then do research maximum number of garages or show rooms which sell second hand bikes. By this you will come across a number of bikes you desire to own. Do test ride the bike which grabs your attention. By test riding it you will get a complete picture of the bike. I mean about its top speed, Pick up, stability and mileage. Please be informed about the prevailing second hand market rates, so that you cant be cheated.

Condition of the Engine:

Ensure that the engine is in good condition and it withstands all sorts of pressure. Start the vehicle in cold conditions, and check that if it has starting trouble. While test riding it ride it in all gears and check whether the gear box is good and the gear shifts are very smooth with out any interruption. Check whether the engine is of the bike itself. Some people change the engine of the bike and fix a duplicate cheap engine, to attract buyers by the vehicles performance and speed. Start the engine and rev the accelerator if it produces more than the expected sound then leave it.

Comfort of the bike:

Check whether the bike is comfortable to ride or not. The main parts to be checked are the shock absorbers. Ride the bike in low speed and apply the front brakes, and observe the movement of the bike. The bike should compress a little bit and return to its original position in no time. If the movement is very slow then ask the owner for changing the shock absorbers. Repeat the same for the rear shock absorbers. Check if the bike is not bending towards one side, because you will suffer a lot after a certain time period. Check the seats condition too. See that the handle is good enough to handle and is not bent or damaged.

External looks and its condition:

See that the bike is good to see [atleast for you!]. The looks of the bike are also equal to its performance. Check whether there are any dents or scratches on the bike. If there are any then try your level best in reducing the price of the bike. See that the lights and indicators are perfectly fit and don’t shake while riding. Also see that there are no extra attachments kept for styling because they may reduce the mileage of the bike. See that the bike’s colour is not faded, if it is then ask him to re-paint it or get your self an another piece.

Mileage:

This is the ultimate reason which you shouldn’t compromise for. Check the mileage of the bike by taking it on a long test ride of about 25 Kilometers. If it’s a bike of the segment 100-125 then it should give a minimum mileage of 55-70. If it belongs to the segment 125-150 then it should give atleast a mileage of about 45-55 Kilometers. And I hope that you wont buy a second hand bike who’s engine capacity is more than 150 cc! The mileage of the bike must be consistent. And also ask the mechanic to check the mileage and report his remarks. Don’t fix any other brand co-operators for extra mileage because they damage the engine.

Documents:

See that the bike is registered and has all the essential documents. Also check whether if the bike is bought through finance and check if the installments are all completed. Buy a bike which belongs only to one individual but not more, because there may be any future problems. And don’t forget to transfer the bike on your name after buying it.

Check that all the odo meters are working correctly and also check the fuel indicator.
Check that all lights including the indicators are working.
Check that the fuel tank has no holes and the engine is not leaking.
Check the condition of the tyres, if they are very bad tell him to change them.
And last but not the least Please don’t get over exited and don’t show more interest in buying a certain bike, because the owner will recognize your curiosity and increases the demand of selling his bike!
