Teen at 8

My daughter is all of 8 but her attitude and behavior matches that of an adolescent. She is a quiet girl in school. Very well behaved. At home she can test my patience considerably especially when it comes to finishing her homework. She leaves home by 7 am to school and is back by 2 pm. Of course, she's tired and hungry when she's back. (But so are all of her classmates). Once she reaches home getting her to do anything of consequence like homework, tidying up her room, etc. falls on deaf ears.

She would love to lounge in front of the telly all afternoon, evening and even late till night...if we let her. Since I run an enterprise of my own, I don't have time till about 7 pm to sit with her for her homework. It's been a long battle, and I've tried many things to build finishing homework as a routine. I'm still trying. Here are some of the things I try to keep in mind.

  1. Be positive. Children can pick up the positive vibes just as well as they pick up negative ones especially from parents.

  2. Make sure both of you have eaten and have refreshed yourselves

  3. At all cost try to avoid scenes over homework. Keep the atmosphere mild and pleasant no matter how irritated you get.

  4. Stick to the same timings everyday as far as possible to develop a routine.
