I really don't understand what all the uss is about!!! Any newspaper to sustain itself needs to focus on revenues. The cost of a newspaper is subsidised for the readers simply based on the advertisment based revenue model run by the newspaper. And if you think using corporate logos and insignias in films is fine, which by the way is a growing world wide trend, (check out the nokias and various car brands used openly in Hollywood films) why not in newspapers. After all newspapers being print media gives you the option of ignoring Advertisments whereas Television and movies do not.
Furthermore, if you look at the Times of India newspaper you will realise that the news is well segmented. The more sensational stuff, which I believe is an indian form of a tabloid is carried by the Delhi Times. And honestly I don't see anything wrong with that. Yeah there are loads of us who like to have a look at pretty women. You wanna say a newspaper cannot use that to sell a few more copies?
I do agree that the idea behind a newspaper, the utopian idea at any rate, is to simply provide pages of information from across the world to allow the reader to keep him self abreast with the latest developments across the world. However I also believe that it is essential for a newspaer to be subdisied by advertisments simply to allow every section of the society to do that (keeping abreast with the world). A newspaper is definitley a business. If a newspaper has to spend more and more to provide ou with a quality product and it doesn't want to charge you anymore than possible a subsidy model based of advertising revenue is imperative.
As fr as content goes, I have to say the TOI is definitely the best newspaper available on the stands today, and honestly I see no point in taking that line any further. Its as clear as anything. Like I said at the beginning I really dont see what the fuss is about.
