As a routine test, my wife's gynac (dr Sanjanwala, Vile Parle) recommended that we get the Triple marker test conducted to identify any congenital defects such as Down's Syndrome. The blood sample was sent across to Thyrocare labs.
The results devastated the two of us. We were informed that the probability of Down's syndrome is very high (this test provides a probability of occurence of such defects based on factors such as the presence of some hormones - HCG in the blood, age of the mother, LMP, ultrasound tests to confirm age of baby, etc.) The next few days were agonising, with the doctor recommending amnio tests. This is slightly risky test, but provides an accurate result. We decided to re-perform the triple marker test - this time from Nicholas Piramal's Phadke labs AND ALSO Metropolis Labs.
Mind you, this test costs a lot of money (close to Rs 1500 each). Both tests came back as negative - providing much relief. In fact, the test results were COMPLETELY different. So much so, that it almost seems as if the blood sample itself could be different. Or the tests were never conducted, and the arbitrary results were provided. Perhaps witha view to repeat the test and earn some more money. ''Thyrocare is always the cheapest; but the results are not reliable'' - said our gynac to us...so why in first place were we recommended to get the test done from Thyrocare.
Needless to say, we also changed our doctor. Another reason to do that was that he refused to let the father (ie, me) in the OT at the time of delivery.
I wonder which century such doctors live in!
