Thunderbird 0.9 version is the newest mail client around. It’s by the same brilliant folks who gave us Firefox 1.0.

Nearly every single feature of Microsoft Outlook/Exchange is here.

I’ve been using it for a few days now and I’m mighty impressed. Heres why:

  1. Fast to start. The app starts within 2-3 seconds unlike Outlook Exchange which takes upto 2-3 minutes.

  2. Look and feel and element placement is the same as Outlook. So you get going immediately. This is good. I’ve experimented with Eudora and some other clients and they’re terrible.

  3. Minimum usage of icons. So no cluttering with some one elses artwork.

  4. Message filtering is very effective. I receive very few junk mails now. Theres a feature to configure this.

  5. It has a feature to display all related messages in a threaded way. Thats somewhat similar to a discussion forum where each message and its reply is nicely formatted for easy reading.

  6. Supports encryption. If you’re a big time banker you might want this feature.

  7. You can create message templates. This is slightly different from a draft.

  8. Barring a few all the short cut keys are similar to Outlook. Ex: To sent a message use Cntrl+Enter instead of Alt + S in Outlook.

Problems so far:

---------------------

I haven’t managed to import my Outlook address book. Some mess up here. But I should be able to do it soon.
