Correct, Right? Well, this is what the book is all about; magic, monocles and magnets all happening in the medieval period.(I guess I have exceeded my alliterations allotment)
The fourth book in the series. And the saga continues…
Continuing from the cliffhanger when Cass eats Senor Hugo’s ‘Time Travel Chocolate’ and gets transported back in time to the Renaissance period to know the Secret(which is after all a secret) where she meets the Jester, the founder of the Terces Society and her ancestor. But she also meets Lord Pharaoh, founder of Midnight Sun. On the other hand, I mean side, I mean time; Max-Earnest is desperately trying to get Cass out of her coma(as her mind is still in the medieval period) while protecting her body and mind from the evil mind readers of the Midnight sun who are trying to get their sinister white gloved hands on the Secret.
The Characters from the book are:
Cass: A survivalist(whatever that means) who is ready to do anything(no matter how stupid or dangerous) to find out the secret.
Max-Earnest: A young aspiring comedian-cum-magician-cum-writer-cum-Sherlock Holmes.
Jester: If Max-Earnest doesn’t, Jester is sure to fry your brain with the ever-so-poor jokes. The only character in the book who is not serious(Duh! He is a jester) and is founder of TERCES Society.
Lord Pharaoh: Founder of Midnight Sun, so evil, so sinister, so cunning…he is James
Moriarty, Captain Hook, Bill Sikes(Oliver Twist) and Lord Voldemort – all rolled into one!
MY VERDICT
This book looked promising when I first got hold of it(A good number of pages and an interesting title is all you need to get me to read a book!) This book kept me hooked till the end. The first half is a little sad and gave me a constant run-down feeling, like the one we get when we miss our favourite TV show or the best friend forgets to wish us on our Birthday. I felt that I will just complete reading it to put Cass’ and Max-Earnest’s(and even my own) mind at rest and pull them out of their misery. But then the second half gains momentum and the entire book makes sense. The whole plot is quite realistic.
While reading the book, I kept wondering if Cass will ever get out of her coma and find the secret. Some portions of the book sounded like the Do-It-Yourself types(a reader who will read it can understand better what I mean by this). There are a lot of mini-mysteries in the book which add to the suspense.
The fonts and illustrations increase the readability of the book. Also, like in the other books of the series, you will find PB’s signature footnotes(which though are completely out of sync with what is happening in the book) are always welcome by me. As an added bonus, there are drills in this book one has to follow in case we sense the Midnight Sun lurking around. There is also an explanation for PB’s deep-seated fear of mayonnaise and respect for sous-chefs.
This book is an all-in-one. Adventure, mystery, comedy… everything is found in abundance.
In the end, another exciting book in the series, and a must read for the PB fans.
