I watched this serial because initially, it was very different compared to the other serials. It focussed on the simple things of life, as reflected by the Sivaraman family. A doting and indulgent mother, an affectionate father, a loving brother, friendly sisters- all concerned about Archana's welfare(everyone except her wily anni Jayanthi).
The focus slowly shifted towards Selvam's family, consisting of an upright and principled Selvam, Poongavanam- a drunkard with a few redeeming qualities, Bhagyam, a greedy lady craving for wealth owing to her distressed circumstances, Vasu, a cunning and lazy man, and Rani, a good natured girl. In the midst of all this, Jayanthi and Sindhamani(her mother) tried all tactics to disrupt Archana's marital life. Some attempts succeeded, and some didn't.
Archana Selvam's life turned around when Bhagyam evicted them from the familial house. They were left to fend for themselves and start again from scratch. Slowly, Selvam climbed the ladder and they became wealthy and started living in a bungalow with all its comforts.
Then, all of a sudden, Selvam's goodness diminished and he started loving Nandhini, his childhood friend, and abandoned Archana! Most viewers are in agreement that this part of the story could have been avoided, and so am I. Roughly, after Episode 1000, the story became very boring and annoying.
An irony not discussed very often- Bhagyam and Vasu were partners in crime for the most part. However, Bhagyam dies an unfortunate death whereas Vasu is glorified by one and all! How is this possible?
Regarding the acting by the actors(except Selvam), I think Archana's father Sivaraman is undoubtedly the best. A pragmatic and equanimous individual, he always maintains a balanced approach towards life. Sometimes however, he trusts blindly, especially with regard to Jayanthi. Sivagami also acts very well, and is perfect as an over-the-top mother. Archana is also a great actress and essays her role convincingly. The same goes for Poongavanam.
The star of the show though, is Selvam! His tears move you, his smiles energize you, his behaviour affects you, his unfairness saddens you, and his affection endears you to him. He shines as a scrubby mechanic, and completely owns the part of a businessman. Selvam is too good:)
All in all, I love this serial(except the end).:)
