There are two types of X-file fan:
a) One who likes Mulder best
b) One who likes Scully best.
It really is as simple as that. Those who chose the latter will not be too bothered at the prospect of Mulder leaving the show. The others? Well, they probably aren't reading this opinion. So is Mulder leaving a good thing? Well, as you may have deduced from the title, I think it is. To demonstrate why, I shall have to divide the show into two sections. You see, there are two types of X-file episode:
a) The one-off episodes about a monster, ghost, or some other odd creature
and
b) What I call the ''conspiracy episodes''
I always find the former to be a lot better, but, then, the X-files wouldn't be the X-files without any of the latter. However, when too many ''conspiracy episodes'' build up, the X-files gets, shall we say, slightly tedious.
Which brings me on to my main point. Why is the show better off without Mulder? The answer is simple. What is the only thing in the X-files connecting the program to the ''Conspirators''? You've guessed it: Mulder. So, without him, all that's left is monster episodes! This has been so for the whole of the series currently running on Sky television.
Obviously there have to be SOME conspiracy episodes in the series, but the bare minimum would suit me fine. Robert Patrick (Mulder's replacement Doggett and T-1000 in T-2) brings a much-needed breath of fresh air to the X-files with a certain amount of role-changing now, with Scully as the 'believer' and Doggett as the sceptic.
Long-live this reign and long may it continue!
