The Wonder Years: an evergreen TV soap

I watched this series sometime when I was a teenager. It was just an average soap for me then. Today when I watch it on Z cafe, I realize I must have really grown a lot as a person since then, to read between the lines and see through what they actually show on this sitcom.

As a child, I only observed what they showed. Today I understand the ‘American family' they portray and I realize that it isn't much different from our very own Indian families that we live in.

It has the stereotypical hot tempered orthodox dad who speaks very little and is always dominating and commanding; the Housewife mother who has a more timid and affectionate stance with the man of the house; the elder daughter who always wants newer things in life at every step and keeps coming out with wacky scenarios; the bullying middle son who gets the kicks out of torturing the youngest son; the youngest son-our hero-Kevin Arnold played by academy award nominated Fred savage (youngest actor to be nominated for an Oscar).

This series has been shown from Kevin’s perspective-of his years growing up as a boy in a small town-the ups and downs; the friendships and romances; the problems and happy occasions-all of them engulfed in this drama.

While this boy's acting is outstanding for someone his age, this sitcom dares you to not fall in love with Kevin through the series. There comes a time when you end up feeling just like him and actually begin to wonder-how did the writers of this soap get so much insight into a young boy's life? Truly a genius script! It must have raised waves in the American television when it was just broadcast.
