Damp squib. Review on The Village Movie

The man who announced himself to the world with The Sixth Sense and continued to enthrall with Unbreakable, sort of let us down with Signs. Now, he comes with one of the most eagerly awaited movies of the year.

On the surface, the tale is weird. The people of a village live in isolation, restricted from crossing the woods (surrounding the village) to go to the ''towns''. There is talk of dangerous creatures and red being the ''bad colour''. First, a man and then his near-blind girlfriend dare to break the rules for good causes.

Some analysts point out the socio-political commentary that lies underneath. For example, the 'protected' village is likened to the whole of USA itself. Also, one can notice the village's leader having a surname that is also part of the current President of the country.

So, now, if you're confused whether this is a thriller or something else, you have company. As a thriller, there are quite a few subtle moments, as one has come to expect. Whether you see it as a satire or not, you'll still be left with many inexplicable situations. Shyamalan seems to have gone overboard in making the movie cryptic. That is symbolised by a scene which features himself, the face not shown directly and only as a reflection on glass. The movie is overall slow and the end leaves the audience in disappointment.

Howard is the star of the show, portraying the brave blind girl in a manner as to touch the audience. Phoenix disappoints overall, lacking charisma. Brody (last year's Oscar winner for Best Actor) is impressive as the madman. Hurt does fine, but Weaver is wasted.

The technical side of the movie is taken care of very well though. Cinematography and art direction stand out. Background score competes for the honours too, ably enhancing the eerie feeling of the movie.

It is difficult to say whether Shyamalan is running out of steam. Maybe, we're seeing his progression to something other than thrillers.
