I second all the views portrayed by some of MSians here about TImes of India (TOI).
TOI churns unworthy news, like paris Hilton lost her pet dog, JLo eloped someone,Jeniffer Aniston lost her Panty etc..to quote few and publish it in noticeble frames at different page locations to catch the glimses of readers (viewers rather!!) , so colorful that are eye catchy too.
Still there are columns like The Open Tree, Suoko Puzzle, Sunday supplementry issue, Asscent (Wednesday Job Oppurtunities), Times Property (on Thursdays ) that are really worth reading, that only makes many people to buy, as otherwise it will be a Mere Tabloid that publishes all page 3 fotos, gossips, run-aways etc.
People on the move buy this Newpaper more to view the Masala tinted fotos rather than reading the contents, as it gives mere pleasure.
To be Honest, they should not call themselves as a Typical Newspaper and should not be compared with other actual Newspapers like The Hindu, Deccan Herald, where the news on national arena in Politics, Social Developments, City Updates, Sports are given priority and significance rather than JLo and Jennifer Aniston's Inner wears!!
Wayback in the late 90's when they entered Bangalore newspaper market, they dropped a Price bombshell to just Re.1 that triggered a fierece competition and other competitors were also forced to bring down
the price. That gave a clear awareness to the public that newspaper dailies can also p[erate at such lower costs and can still generate profits. That was the best thing about TOI.
Also weekend coverage is also quite good, if you are a shopping freak, as no other dailies gives out as many sale deals / offers as this paper does. This paper , though targets cosmopolitans, still its language and vocabulary should be improved, and many occassions there were typographical errors, visibly seen even on main headlines. I cannot comment on its other Karnatka regional editions like Mangalore as I have not goen through them. Other thing I see them missing is a strong Editorial comments on current affairs rather discussing on age old events. Not only their Newspaper smells more Masalas ( in terms of fotos, party nites etc) their webpage (indiatimes.com) too contains Masala (non veggie items too) that gives a picture of an Adulterated newspaper !! The fotos that appear in the opening page, many times is an eye sorer and creates lot of Embarrassments
especially at work place, if some pee-a-boo your monitor, as the pictures are more revealing ( creates Unnecessary Tempatsions too ;-) )
There were certainother ironies too like when the Entire nation is celebrating INdependence day and all other national dailies talk abou that in the Opening Page headlines, this paper talks about scandals, actor Govinda's associate accident and all such rubbish
Better they should call themselves as Tabloid and not Newspaper !!
