Times of India is a newspaper best avoided. It is an ideal example of a newspaper without quality. I am used to read a quality newspaper named ‘The Hindu’. Anybody who’s used to reading ‘The Hindu’ is sure to find the TOI a ‘bad read’. I used to read The Hindu for 1-2 hours a day and still find lots to read. TOI can be best read in 10-15 minutes.

To start with the quality of the editorial is pretty bad. It doesn’t come forth boldly with its views. It just touches here and there. And one finds them changing the stand very often.

The news coverage reminds one of the sops been shown on various channels. Sensationalism and sentiments are the mantras followed by TOI journalists. Credibility of the story, impartial reporting, detailed reporting, highlighting public issues, etc are neglected for the above objectives.

All the news items are very brief, with stress on huge and catchy headings. There are a lot of useless photographs with again some catchy captions. But is entertainment what a newsreader wants, I doubt. None of the news items are fully researched and detailed. The sports coverage and reporting is pathetic. If anybody have read R.Mohan’s or Vijay Lokappilly’s cricket coverage in ‘The Hindu’, please avoid TOI sports page.

I find the supplement ‘Bombay Times’ the most irritating. Apart from the cartoons on page 2 (for children) there is nothing in that 6-8 sheets of paper. I don’t understand who reads that and who writes that. If its entertainment that they wish to convey, well I feel pity for them, cos I don’t even in my wildest imagination expect print media to provide entertainment the way television can do. Then why try?

Maybe the supplement Education Times is useful for students. I have found some interesting articles in that. Also ‘News You Can Use’ on Sundays is also useful. Ascent should be awaited by jobseekers. No big journalism have to be done on these.

Apart from that I find TOI an example of bad journalism. It is a pathetic newspaper for a vibrant city like Mumbai. But unfortunately, there are few alternatives left for the public. The Asian Age looks a better option but then I have not really gone through that to recommend or offer any expert comments.

Anyway my sincere suggestion to an enthusiastic newsreader is to avoid TOI like the plague. Cos one could get addicted to the silly kind of journalism they follow.
