For starters, I have never been an admirer of The Times of India. The newspaper, in my opinion, demonstrates a blatant lack of professional standards. Important or critical news items get miniscule coverage, or at times, no coverage at all... but celebrities, socialites and the P3 types get more of a chance to hog the limelight here than in any other newspaper.
Then there are occasions when the front page is shamelessly used to promote the Group's other business ventures — FM Radio, Planet M, Times NOW, and so on. And the level of bias is unbelievable. Every release from Times Music is a megahit. Every event at Planet M is a runaway success. After some time, you really can't believe a word of what they say.
And now, The Times of India has managed to hit a new low. It has threatened and shut down a blog that had the audacity to criticise it. In the process, it is carved out a new niche out for itself as The Street Bully. A newspaper is supposed to be a vital weapon for any democracy... but what can you say about a newspaper that does not believe in the concepts of democracy and free speech. Anything they write on these topics should, in future, be taken with a pinch (no make that a fistful) of salt. Talk about hypocrisy!
