There was a time, not too long ago, when schools and parents used to encourage children to read one of the national dailies. The objective was multifold. One was definitely to help children keep abreast of current affairs. But the other not so direct benefit used to be an improvement in vocabulary and language skills.
Now it is the latter part where TOI has fallen into a deep abyss. The headlines no longer are straight and indicative of the article. The headlines are more like cheap SMS messages. Sample some of the recent ones :
King Cong..... (TOI 13.05.04)
Keh Do Na... You are my Sonia (ET 13.05.04)
Halal on Dalal (TOI 15.05.04)
Now at Delhi Talkies, Hyderabad Blues (ET 12.05.04)
Such crass, irrelevant headlines can be expected of local evenigers and other tabloids but to see English Language National Dailies of repute of TOI & ET is actually sickening.
It is time that they switched back to a more acceptable and mature reporting else they risk losing readership!!
