The Terminal

Psst - This section will contain some inside trivia about the film.

Quotes - Good one liners from the movie.

Oops - Goofs From the movie.

Director ? Steven Spielberg

Screenplay ? Andrew Niccol, Sacha Gervasi and Jeff Nathanson

In the not so far future, Viktor Navorski(Tom Hanks), a citizen of Krakozhia is stranded in New York?s JFK Airport. Its because his country has a military coup which forced his country to cease all relations with other countries and hence is passport is now invalid. Since he is only in the airport he can not even go out in NY city due to his status of a citizen of No Land. He is detained in the airport by strict instructions from disciplinarian charge of airport ? Frank Dixon(Stanley Tucci).

Since he can not do anything he tries to live and survive in the airport itself. He becomes friends with the airport staff ? Janitor Gupta (Kummar Pallana ) , Enrique (Diego Luna) Officer Torres (Zoe Saldana). He also falls in love with a flight stewardess Amelia (Catherine Zeta Jones). The entire film is about his survival in the airport terminal. Story is more or less in the mould of Hank?s earlier hit Cast Away.

First Rate performance by everyone, especially Tom Hanks, who doesn?t even have many dialogues because of his role and yet proves why he is still amongst the best actor in the world. Superb direction by Steven Spielbeg and charming music by Spielberg?s favourite composer John Williams. Special mention must be made about Alex McDowell, Christopher Burian-Mohr, Isabelle Guay and Anne Kulijan who had designed the enormous sets and made an entire hangar look like the JFK airport. Don?t be surprised if this film bags the oscar or atleast gets nominated for the award for Best Art Direction/ Set Decoration. A must watch for all Spielberg fans and Tom Hank?s fans. Watch out for the hilarious dinner scene of Tom Hanks and Catherine Zeta Jones.

Psst ?

1) Movie is inspired by the real life story of an Iranian man Merhan Nasseri who was stranded in Paris?s Charles De Gaulle Airport after being denied entry in England since he had lost his Passport and the United Nation?s Refugee Certificate. Like the movie, Merhan was denied entry outside the airport and he was a stateless person. Later he had been granted permission to enter France or go back to Iran. He decided to just stay at the terminal and tell his story to anyone who would care to listen.

2) Actor Bernie Marc(Gambling dealer Frank of Ocean?s 11) and Ben Kingsley were considered for pivotal roles but they had to pull out due to a scheduling conflicts.

3) The language that Tom Hank?s speaks is Bulgarian and with very little accent since Hank?s wife is a half Bulgarian (Rita Wilson?s former name is Margarita Ibrahimova).

4) 2 endings were filmed although only 1 was used.

5) Entire Airport set was constructed in a large former hangar. The escalators, the restaurants, the cash registers and mostly all the props were very real and fully functional. 60,000 square feet of granite flooring and 100,000 watts of lightning were used as a part of the sets. There were 35 branded retail outlets which were build for the movie.

6) 5 scripts were drafted before this one was finalised

Quotes ?

1) ?Are you coming or Going? I do not know, both.?

2) ?You catch a small fish and unhook him very carefully. You place him back in the water, so that someone else can have the pleasure of catching him.?

3) ? I am afraid of er. Ghosts?

4) ?No, I haven't been waiting for you to retire.?

5) ?Do you have an appointment??

6) ?I have to go; I have to stay; Story of my life; Mine, too.?

7) ?I can't ask him what he's doing. I'm supposed to tell him what he's doing. I ask him what he's doing and I'm gonna look like an idiot.?

8) ?He sh. Sh. Sh. Sh; He Sh**? Oh. He Cheat.?

9) ?You better be careful. You know those flight attendents ain't like regular women, Viktor. They're flying back and forth between all those time-zones kinda messes with their biological clock or something. Always ready for sex. Why do you think they can't stop smiling??

10) ? The Medicine is for Goat.?

Oops ?

1) When Viktor and Amelia are having dinner, their glasses are fullt o half full and then full again.?

2) When Viktor and Amelia are having dinner, her pager is going off in her bag and we see a close-up of it. In the next shot, her pager is vibrating on the table.

3) When Viktor is going down the escalators, the assistants from fast food chains have nothing in their hands, in the next scene they have lots of shopping bags.

4) Although Bruxelles is French for Brussels, it is very unlikely that it would be used in the arrival/departure board in New York Airport.

5) When Viktor is holding the four confiscated medicine bottles, they alternate from 2 in each hand to 3 in one hand and 1 in the other hand between shots.
