“Rain drops on roses and whiskers on kittens....... These are a few of my favorite things........”This is the song which is always played to pep up the sad mood in the movie. This is one of my favorite lyrics too and I happened to watch this movie again after some real long time which made take a nostalgic walk.

A movie made in 1965 may cause people to have their own doubts about the casting, screenplay and other technical details in today’s contemporary era.

But when I re-saw this movie, all I can say it’s the best of the era. The photography, the picture perfect sceneries were all just astounding. Last, but not the least, a very lovely movie which will always be loved by generations and one of the must have movie collection.

The Sound of Musical - 1965 - A musical movie is a very simple story with some lovely screenplay.

The story is about Maria and the VonTrapp children. Maria is a simple girl who believes a lot in singing and is always distracted by nature which helps her to burst into a song.......

The movie starts with Maria singing at the mountains enjoying the nature and basking in the warm sunshine.....She wants to become a nun at the abbey, but her distractions are plenty thus making her stay at the silent somber abbey a miracle.......

As the sisters at the Abbey put forth when asked about Maria's opinion,

''How do u solve a problem like Maria???”.......

This is one of the million dollar question faced by the sisters at the Abbey. There was none at the Abbey who could detest Maria........but at the same time...... it was decided that Maria work as a Governess for the VonTrapp children for some time and then return to the Abbey to become a Nun.

Maria though a bit upset with this idea takes up the job of becoming a Governess. She being Maria takes the situation in her stride and enters the huge VonTrapp villa with a song on her lips...

Maria being Maria rushes to the entrance of the VonTrapp villa..... and is greeted by the strict Captain VonTrapp, a widowed Naval Officer who treated his children like sailors.

She's asked to whether she is a strict disciplinarian. The children are called to the hall by the sound of the whistle and Maria much to her disgust and dismay is asked to note the manner in which the whistle is blown for each child.

Maria, who is outspoken, shows no fear for the Captain and refuses to call the children by a whistle sound and herself to answer for a whistle.... ''Whistles are for animals ...not for children and certainly not for me'' is her curt answer.

She asks for the introduction of the children by their lovely names:

o Liesl, 16 and without need of a governess;

o Friedrich, 14 and impossible;

o Louisa, 13 and an experienced prankster;

o Kurt, 11 and incorrigible;

o Brigitta, 10 and an observant fashion critic;

o Marta, 7 and a fan of pink parasols;

o Gretl, 5 and always last (because she is the most important).

The children try to play a naughty prank on Maria in order to drive her away.......... But Maria takes the prank as one of the best forms of welcoming a stranger into a household during the dinner time. The very word welcome causes pangs of guilt in the children minds and they decide to give her a chance.

Maria's joyful and bubbly nature soon wins her the children's love and affection. The Captain leaves home on his trip and the children and Maria enjoy their lovely stint with nature and singing with just the manipulation of DoReMi.....

To quote from the movie.....

''When you read you begin with A-B-C

When you sing you begin with do-re-mi”

The children enjoy the days laughing and playing, singing songs and learning songs to welcome the Baroness who is going to accompany their father when he returns from his trip. The Captain on return from the trip finds his children totally unruly and admonishes Maria for the same. Being outspoken as she is, Maria rebukes him saying they are children who want to be loved and not treated like strait jacketed sailors on a ship.

Maria is asked to leave the house immediately and when the Captain enters the house...he finds the children singing a melodious song....the house which had no singing and laughter after the death of the Captain's wife had got back its joyful nature with Maria.

The Captain apologizes to Maria and she stays back. There is a party thrown in order to introduce the Baroness who was soon to be the Captain's wife. At the party, the children sing and entertain the guests. The Captain's friend who conducts musical show competitions decides to enter the VonTrapp children for the same.

The Captain soon falls in love with the cheerful Maria who is also loved by the children unlike the Baroness.

The movie then takes a twist when the war starts in Austria and the VonTrapp family uses the competition musical show to flee from the war.

How many of us can find happiness is small things like a “Rain drops on roses………..” The movie makes us realize that the small subtle things which we hardly pay any attention can bring so much happiness when we watch them.
