It was quite surprising not to see any reviews here on such a beautiful web series. The crime-drama series based on the real life of infamous merciless killer Charles Sobhraj,
Produced by BBC and currently playing on Netflix, the series showcases the real life events of the criminal Charles Sobhraj, who started his notorious activities in 1970's in Bangkok.
He typically used to target tourists or travelers exploring the world, rob them, kill them and use their identity on passport to travel the world. I would not disclose the whole story and ruin your interest, however will reveal few details here.
Born to an Indian father and an Indonesian mother, Charles had a difficult childhood due to parent's divorce, his mother re-marrying another person etc which leads him into evil things right at the young age.
Initially married in Paris, he travels the world and is involved with a lot of criminal offences and jail-terms. One fine day, his first wife, tired of this, leaves him. Charles, then moves to Bangkok as a gem dealer and befriends another woman, who he treats as his wife, however introduces her as his secretary. He also has another Indian origin accomplice - Ajay, together the trio preys on foreign travelers, initially help them with things, then rob them for money and their valuables or kill them and forge their passports to travel around the world.
Charles spends a lot of years in Indian jail, after he is nabbed here, however a smart Charles, makes good use of law to extend his jail term in India to 20 years, by doing this he avoids extradition to Thailand, where he would have been executed.
After his jail-term in India, he lives few quiet years in Paris, however returns to Nepal in year 2003, where he is finally caught again and is currently serving life imprisonment there(nobody knows the real reasons for his return to Nepal, even the web series has claimed that they could not ascertain the reasons for the same).
Shot in a sequel of back and forth events in time, the series is quite an interesting watch and keeps you hooked. It showcases a complete life story of a smart, charming, womanizer, daring Charles! All characters are apt have made justice to the role they have played - especially the prime 3 characters: Charles(played by Tahar Rahim), his female accomplice: Monique(played by Jenna Coleman) & Billy Howle as Herman Knippenberg - who works for Dutch embassy and plays a key role in gathering all the evidence and helping cops to nab Charles.
All in all, I would rate this series a 5-star and you need to watch it!
