If someone ever made a movie on Regent Hotel, Bandra, Mumbai, it would probably have to be called ''Nightmare at Land's End.'' I have been there only once and I promised myself that I would never go there again.
Why do I say this? Let me tell you a little story. In September 2000, I received an e-mail from the Singapore office of Welch Allyn, a big multinational company dealing with medical instruments. Their proposal was to place advertisements in my web journal. Their country medical advisor, based in Chennai, was visiting Mumbai and wanted to see me in that connection.
At 3 p.m. which was the appointed time, I approached the reception desk to enquire about my guest -- I was told that he had checked out of the hotel at around 11 a.m! When I asked them to check whether he had left any message for me, they said no, nothing was there. I called my visitor on his mobile, and it appeared that he was in the hotel itself but not in his room. And so on and so on. Finally I missed my meeting because of those fellows and lost a big contract.
It is true that I have not stayed in the hotel, but if a company botches up a simple thing like this, can I trust them for more? I think not.
