“The Mexican” – R – New to Video/DVD This Week

Jerry (Brad Pitt) is trying to get out of the mob business. His girlfriend, Samantha (Julia Roberts), has demanded he do so to save their failing relationship. They have been in couple’s therapy already and they aren’t even married yet.

The Mob will let Jerry out of the business after he finishes one more job. But that’s too long for Sam, so she leaves for Las Vegas to start a new career and Jerry is off to Mexico to do his last job. Jerry must recover a pistol named “the Mexican.” There is a legend about this gun and it is worth a lot of money. Everyone is after this gun and Jerry keeps losing it. Then he gets a phone call from Sam. She is being held hostage until Jerry brings the gun to his boss. Her kidnapper, Leroy (James Gandolfini), starts giving love and relationship advice to an angry Sam.

Sam ends up having a lot more fun then Jerry. He is running all over Mexico and she is partying it up with the kidnapper and a hitchhiker. The gun is said to be cursed and Jerry is agreeing with that. So, how will he get to Sam and return the gun?

J.H. Wyman wrote “The Mexican” and Gore Verbinski directed it. Brad Pitt played the role of a babbling idiot. He wasn’t so much funny as he was dumb. Julia Roberts, on the other hand, played a screaming fool. If you rent the video or DVD you will see Gene Hackman’s name on the box. Don’t let that fool you! He had the smallest role of all and I found that very disappointing. The funniest part of the movie was the rabid Mexican dog that tagged along with Jerry. The scenes with the dog were the few that made me chuckle.

The idea of teaming Brad Pitt and Julia Roberts in a film was a great one. But they needed a script that would complement them both. Pitt playing the role of a fool was pathetic. He does have the ability to perform in a comedy, but not this one. The movie wasn’t all bad. A few funny parts and the pairing of these two superstar actors make it worth watching, but it didn’t win any awards and it did not deserve to.

Enjoy!
