Awarded Oscar(1963) for Best-Cinematography and Best Art-Direction and Nominated for the Best Art-Direction, Best Film Editing and Best Picture, ''The Longest Day'' was one of the Best War Movie ever made till this very day. At one time, it was even compared to ''Ben Hur'', but ofcourse they are two totally different movie.

The Longest Day, can be considered the longest on many accounts. It had an amazing 48 International Stars, 3 directors and it took more than 2 years to get to Cinema Halls. For this movie was made on grand scale, without any cost cutting, and highly impressive sets.

Plot :

The movie is the set on the battleground of Normandy beach, World War II. The battle which changed the course of the war, and the history. The movie showcases the actual occurrence of Battle of Normandy. Its about the willingness of the American and Allied forces to get onto the war even through the unfavorable climatic conditions. But the best part of the movie is its depiction of Germans as intelligent people always trying to out-think and anticipate the next move of the Allied Forces.

But for the miscalculation and carelessness of the German, they would have been the laughing lot. German lose Normandy and goes on to lose the war.

There are 48 International Stars, yet none the Hero. Everyone is German, Allied or American soldier, Hero for his Country and Villain for the opposition.

Direction:

Ken Annakin, Andrew Marton and Bernhard Wicki(thanx madlalya) :(. All the three directors do a flawless job. The Excellent Performance and the Great Camera work takes the direction to another level.

Attraction:

Authenticity.

All Parts of Film Making(Plot, Direction, Camera, Performance .....).

Depiction of thoughts of the German, Allied and American side.

Few Actual World War II footage.

Excellent Dialogues.

Flaws:

Length of the Movie (210 min.).

An American Movie, so a bit of American Heroism.

The Authenticity is its Nemesis too, leads to an abrupt end.

Memorable Dialogues:

''The thing that's always worried me about the being one of the few is the way we keep on getting fewer.''- Flight Officer David Campbell.

''Only two kinds of people are gonna stay on this beach; those who are already dead and those who are going to die !'' - Brigadier General Norman Cota.

''Wounds my heart with a monotonous languor.''- Radio Announcer.

Overall:

Great movie, 2 Oscars very few, for what the movie showcases. Authenticity being its Scoring point as well nemesis. But still a movie suitable for anyone's Private Collection. Movie's Punchline : ''This is the day that changed the world. When history held its breath''.

Rating : 5/5

Confession:

I must confess that I'm a war movie freak. So I can get a bit biased too, but not in this case. No, not in the case of ''The Longest Day''.
