There are voices and then, there are voices. And there are voices that can draw you in and make you experience the emotional turmoil that lies within the depths of the singer's soul... I'm going to share one such voice... one such experience... with you...

A song called Mandinka was my first taste of the lady's incredible voice - the incentive I needed to pick up a copy of The Lion and The Cobra, the debut album of the Irish Lass with the shaved head - Sinead O'Connor.

Her voice made me fall in love with her. Because it was a perfect blend of power and emotion. Her songs echoed the dark emotions that were the result of a painful and troubled childhood. And darkness is something I can relate to...

Sinead O'Connor

---------------------------------------------------------------

Sinead O'Connor, the person, was unconventional and a walking invitation to controversies. She shaved off her hair to look ugly so that men wouldnt make a pass at her. She wore weird clothes. She tore up the picture of the Pope in front of a Saturday Night Live audience after yelling ''Fight The Real Enemy''. She refused to perform at a venue when the American national anthem was scheduled to be played before her act...

She was the owner of a hauntingly beautiful voice...

About The Lion and The Cobra

---------------------------------------------------------------

The album packs nine tracks that explore a wide range of sonic textures that support Sinead's vocal prowess. The songs range from dark gloomy passages to ballads to some synth laced stompers. In short - an eclectic mix.

The pick of the album for me is Mandinka, a song that I've loved since I first heard it. The title of this review is also borrowed from the same song. Each and every song is unique and its hard to express in words. The tracks I want your (hands on me), Jackie,Jerusalem... they're Sinead O'Connor in her element...

When to listen...

---------------------------------------------------------------

There are days when you just want to experience solitude and listen to something that will help you get in touch with your inner turbulent self... invoke the Lion and the Cobra on those days... and slip into a sonic voyage that will yank every fibre of your being...

Sinead O'Connor the person may be a whack job but Sinead O'Connor the singer is nothing short of INCREDIBLE.

I do know.... mandinkaaaa.... I do know http://www... mandinkaaa
