Grand Sweets at Gandhinagar, Adyar is very famous in Chennai, and much patronised by orthodox Brahmins and Jains as the sweets and snacks are supposed to be prepared with pure ingredients by Brahmin cooks who follow the madee traditions. In other words they have a captive market even though the quality of their food items is nothing extraordinary vis a vis price.
Grand Sweets is the most disorganised sweetmeat store with exorbitant prices for very average quality products.
The customer service is abysmally poor. The place is always hot and crowded so it is very difficult for the customer to see the food items on display.
Prices are not prominently displayed, which they ought to be, considering that Grand charges at least 25% more than its comparable competitors such as Sri Krishna.
Once the customer manages to push his way to the counter, the order is taken and a token is given for delivery. I was made to wait for half an hour only to be told that the item I ordered would not be ready for another 2 hours, which they ought to have told me right from the beginning instead of wasting my time. Like a fool, believing that their sweets are very good, I came back later to collect my order, and paid an astronomically exorbitant price, even higher than the most expensive mithai stores of Bombay. After all that, I expected the quality of the sweets and snacks to be superb, but they were most mediocre and certainly not worth the exorbitant price. The badam halwa had a taste of synthetic almond flavouring and a texture that suggested the inclusion of flour or some cheap binding agent, rather than the pure almonds it should have contained @ Rs 515 per kg!
All I can say is that Grand Sweets are the biggest rip off with the worst customer service and the least value for money. Give me Sri Krishna Sweets any day. Even ordinary sweetmeat shops offer better value for money.
Never again.
