Movies like this one need no introduction, no reason, no recommendations for anyone to watch it, just the name is enough. I rent movies from BigFlix and after a wait of around 1 month I finally got this one delivered at my door step. I had lot of expectations from it, feels like a joke that it’s the first time I saw it, as it’s considered to be the Baap of all the cowboy/Western movies.. and here is a Big Yesssss for Recommentation.. It does really live up to its name and fame.

My Take :

There are mainly three characters; The Good or Blondie, The Bad or Angel Eyes, and the Ugly or Tuco. All three are master Gunslingers, who are strong, gutsy, fearless, excellent in gunfights and greedy for money to the core. All of them are mean that’s sure, but what they differ on is.. there extent of heartlessness. The Good does have some standards in the way he carries out his business and give a thought before killing someone. The Bad uses all possible ruthless ways to get to his target, i.e. Money, and killing a man for him is nothing more than killing a leech. The ugly, my favorite, may be unattractive in his appearance and less proficient than the other two, but always manage to get things done, meanest of them all. For me the movie belongs to the Ugly one.

About the Story :

The Bad, Angel Eyes, comes to know of Gold, worth $200,000, buried somewhere and for the exact spot he needs to find a man named, Bill Crayson. While he is busy locating this man, Blondie and Tuco are making up for their life by playing a game of arrest and release. Tuco has a prize of $200 on his head for the offense of … (Well the list is so long.. that it takes around 4 minutes for the executioner to read it out,) and it mounts up every time he runs away and do some more crimes,. Every time they are about to execute him, Blondie manages to free him, then they divide the money in two halves. Then Blondie catches Tuco again and get him arrested and on and on.. But things change one day, when Blondie trick Tuco, takes whole of the money and leaves Him in the desert, without anything, to wander and to die. Then Tuco takes the revenge and play the same trap to him but in a much worse and mean way.

The story takes the turn when Tuco and Blondie, by chance, hit upon Bill Crayson, taking his last breaths, but before dying he tells them the secret of the treasure, but in parts. Now Tuco knows the location of the graveyard and Blondie knows the name of the person under whose grave gold is buried. So, three of them moves towards the place, there’s lot of drama and action till they reach the graveyard. Finally, who gets the Gold? and who dies?, I won’t reveal. Most of us have already seen the movie, I guess, I am keeping it for the rest.

About the Cast :

Clint Eastwood as Blondie (The Good) is perfect, mostly silent but whatever words come out of his mouth have become the golden words which were repeated in movies afterwards. Whenever one imagines a cowboy his is the reflection that comes to mind.

Lee Van Cleef as Angel Eyes (The Bad) fits well in the character. He reminds me of Danny Denzogappa, when in villain role. One glance on his face is enough to tell you that how dangerous and hard-hitting, the man he is. Though he has got the least space in the movie among the three, he outshines the others in most of the scenes, he is part of.

Eli Wallach as Tuco (The Ugly) is my favorite. He is the star of the show. He and Blondie are akin to Viru and Jay of Sholey, except the fact that, they’re in no way.. Friendssss. The wittiness and humor Eli brings in, make the movie watch able, again and again.

About the Director :

Direction by Sergio Leone is marvelous. I have also seen “Once upon a time in the west” by him and that’s a must watch too. Now I’m looking forward to other movies by him, especially the ones in this chain of westerns with Clint Eastwood like; A fist full of dollors; Hang’m High etc. The location and settings chosen are perfect, fits well with the theme of the movie. All other departments are handled efficiently too.

About the Music :

Music is another wonderful attribute, though it’s the same tune that repeats in the background mostly, but its so soothing to ears and connects so well to characters and theme that you don’t feel its getting repetitive. We have song on that tune too, in hindi,, Tuuu .. who tuu hai. (Movie name I don’t remember). Don’t know if you have ever heard of it.

About the Movie :

Movie came, first, in 1966 and its 3 hours long. It’s slow at moments, but slowness only adds the curiosity, and you never get bored. Once you sit to watch, finish it in one go, that way the feel never goes. The first ten minutes goes without any words. And the last scene, where three of them stands against each other and camera moves from their eyes to faces, faces to guns, and guns to hands and all around; and only one is supposed to live and take the whole of money, is just superb. The backdrop of the civil war adds up to the story and keeps it moving and helps in bringing the required twists and turns.

Some of the scenes I liked are:

All the dialogues, mostly by Tuco, which go like “There are two kinds of..” are Sahiii hai. But the best one is comes out of Blondie;

You see, in this world, there are two kinds of people, my friend…

those with loaded guns..

and those who dig.

So you dig.”

The scene where Tuco tries to get information out of Bill. Bill asks for water and is at the verge of dying but Tuco is more worried about the location of Gold, his excitement is amazing but that’s the height of meanness.

The scene where they blow the bridge and nice talk they have while setting the explosives to it.

I’ll stop here because if I Won’t, I may put every scene here. So the best way to put it is that the best scene is one which starts at the launch and finishes with the end credits .. and it lasts for 3 hours ..Huehh

Last Words :

So, my conclusion is, it’s a must watch for hardcore Western’s fans. It really stands tall among all the cowboy movies and lives up to its name. Though most of us must have already seen it, but if not, you can even think of buying a DVD, you won’t regret. A classic cowboy movie which will always remain among my favorites and it wont be for The Good or The Bad but for The Ugly one..
