This is my first review in the movies section. The primary reason being that over the last quarter or so even as I had the pleasure to watch so many movies, there was none as superb as The English Patient.
I have not read the novel from the which the storyline has been picked up but it is indeed very involving. The quality of direction is excellent as is the camerawork. No wonder it won nine Oscars! The implications of the war are depicted effectively -- the transition from the times of enjoyment to separation and struggle to stay alive is so true and moving.
The performances are the high point --- be it Ralph Fiennes and Kristin Scott have done full justice to their roles. But it is Binochet who comes out as the ultimate in the role of a nurse and the phases she goes through in the war times.
I would put this movie as one of the best I have ever seen from Hollywood.
