The Economist is one of the great magazines, and,is arguably the finest weekly news magazine in the world. It certainly has a growing reputation around the world, both for its solid contents,standard of writing and its international coverage.It displays an amazing attention to detail and is far superior,in my opinion,to the likes of Time or Newsweek.
It is not difficult to find the reasons why.I admit to being an economist and thus am open to being biased on account of being very interested in the subject matter but I believe the Economist is very,very, interesting to non economists just as it is to economists.
It has a simply magnificent team of writers who have a real ability in defining complex issues in easy to understand terms. The standard of writing in this British-based publication has always been high and among famous people who worked for this publication were the development economist Lady Barbara Ward, Professor Robin Marris of Cambridge and Norman McRae who was an astute futorologist. The journalists working for the Economist are erudite and are great wordsmiths.
This publication,it should be emphasized is not just about economics but covers international affairs, politics, science,technology, the arts and cultural developments in an insightful manner. It is informative,often critical, and does not toe a particular country's line.
The magazine has sections dealing with Asia,the United States, the Americas, International,Britain and Europe. Normally each weekly isssue runs to around 150 pages.Some of its reviews of the likes of medicine,technology and scientific developments are far sighted and most interesting.
In my view it is less biased than Time or Newsweek and is a wonderful read. It is not parochial but truly internationally minded,Some of its schools briefs have been absolutely brilliant, as are the business surveys. If you want to be well informed then I would strongly recommend reading the Economist !
