Brings back the essence of horror

James Wan is back from his sabbatical from horror movies ( yayy! ) and nothing makes this more exciting.

The director of Saw, Insidious and Conjuring, after making billions with Fast & Furious 7 returns to scary and creeps showing everyone that this is his home. He returns to what he does best and with the sequel of 2014 smash The Conjuring.

Complete nerve-wreck after seeing the trailers, the wait for this movie to come to theatres has been exhilarating. Always craving for some scary and freak-me-out-of-my-seat kind of horror movie. The last one ( 1920 London) was a disappointment, complete and totally.

Getting back to the spine chilling lore, Ed and Lorraine Warren ( Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga) six years after the Rhode Island event, begin a paranormal investigation of infamous Amityville case and get worldwide notability. But then Lorraine is tired and exhausted from all the conjure that she had been experiencing, about the same time she starts getting visions of involving demon dressed as a nun. With all critics trying to disapprove their work, Lorraine just doesn’t know if she can keep up with her day job.

A year later, they are recruited by the Catholic Church or rather forced into the limelight to purify a demonic presence, referred to by a priest as “England Amityville”.

Before the duo arrives at Enfield, North London, the director James Wan has spent ample time in making up the storyline of Hodgson’s. Peggy Hodgson ( Frances O’Connor) is the single mother trying to maintain a family with four children but she it becomes tediously difficult to do so when a demonic presence begins to ramble the house. This paranormal presence specifically targets the youngest of four, Janet ( Madison Wolfe) and at nights she is becomes prey by various terrors – like waking up in the living room, being physically attacked.

By the time Warrens arrive, the media has begun circusing around the house and raising questions as if this can be just a hoax put out by Janet. This leaves them with more difficulty than they were expecting and scepticism goes on till the end.

The worse thing that can happen to a sequel is being copy of the original and thank goodness that is not the case with The Conjuring 2. What I really liked about the movie is the new tricks and scare. The movie also gives space to all the skeptics that Ed and Lorraine faced during their investigations and career. This definitely adds more depth to the story and Warrens actually expressing doubt to valid about what’s going on in Hodgson house.

The script has consistent jump-scares and frights that really doesn’t get near boring and also with Ed and Lorraine showing their investigating skills and emotional support towards each other ( becomes bit drab at a point) , just keeps the rhythm going and definitely I was sitting on edge of my seat when it came to jump-scares.

What makes this flick worth watching is the cinematography, the duo James Wan and Don Burgess have created a striking and effective scare, where camera is always dynamic. He clearly know when and when-not to unleash a scare. He has certainly established as a respectable horror movie filmmaker who knows how to get his audience’s blood rushing with adrenaline. There are scenes where I had to literally focus to register as to what I have been looking at and upon recognition there is this feeling that I can only describe as brain curdling.

Performances are to be watched, as excellent as they get. Frances O’Connor terrific as a mother with the strong intuition of saving her daughter. Madison Wolfe could definitely can register fear more palpably compared to all the scream queens. And what to say about Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga – acting speaks volumes for their skills - their chemistry is undeniably envious.

The whole camera wizardry brings live in an undead evil. This cannot be expressed or felt in my words but this movie has got to be experienced at a bigger screen. Because words don’t run chills down your spine but spookiness does.
