Jason Bourne’s trilogy ends on a high note. The Bourne Supremacy was a
sort of a let down but Director Greengrass gets it going with this Ultimate of the espionage story, which is a captivating suspense thriller.
Bourne is seeing flashes in his mind that are captures from his past that he has lost. After the amnesia that
engaged him for 2 movies previously, he has a sense of recollection throughout this film and is now determined to know the ultimate secret which also involves
the darkest CIA mission – Blackbriar.
A journalist is on the run and is keenly helped by the talented Bourne in a thrilling sequence in London’s
Waterloo train station. The manner in which Bourne dodges through crowds and
surveillance cameras boasts of one of the most thrilling sequences.
The film moves through a populated but spectacularly shot Tangier in
Morocco where a foot-chase involving the assassin, the local Police, Julia
Stilles and Jason Bourne.
The action here is raw, visceral and classy. There isn’t any heavy camera work or special effects involved in the chase that follows after Bourne leaves his bike outside a crowded market and heads for the
rooftops of the buildings. From one building to another, he jumps to balconies
of apartments in order to get to Julia before the pursuer does. The combat
between Bourne and the assassin is as raw as it gets and the ‘In-your-face’
style of filming the punching and the beating is overwhelming.
Apart from these sequences, there is
not a whole lot that will hold your attention in the same manner.
The film loses its pace a few times
but revives as soon as Bourne gets the next clue to get closer to unravelling
the mystery.
A fine performance by Matt Damon,
truly in semblance to the novel-character of Bourne. The dark side of his
character has been well portrayed by him as he becomes a ruthless hunter for
the truth.
Cinematography is excellent and we
have fewer jerky images of the camera during the action sequences. Yet, the
style remains true to reality and in conjunction with what the franchise has
been following.
Director Greengrass is strict with
his screenplay and puts a lot of sense into an action movie. Where others
easily falter, he excels with his experience with thrillers (United 93,
Supremacy) and delivers an action packed flick with a good plot and superb
performances which makes this film different from the summer blockbusters.
For Bourne fanatics, it will be a
treat.
