This is going to be a difficult review for me to write, because I know more about Howard Hughes, than is shown in this movie. I even saw him twice, once when he was hiding in Vancouver, Canada, and the other time, when he bought a hotel, in Las Vegas, (trying to get rid of the mob from owning hotels there.
Howard Hughes, (was born in Texas). His family became rich, when his father invented a drill bit, to use in the oil industry.
The Cast:
Leonardo DiCaprio as Howard Hughes
John C. Reilly as Noah Dietrich
Cate Blanchett as Katherine Hepburn
Alec Baldwin as Juan Trippe
Alan Alda as Sen. Ralph Owen Brewster
Kate Beckinsale as Ava Gardner
Gwen Stefani as Jean Harlow
My Review
The movie begins when Howard?s father has died, and he became the riches young man in the World, (he was 18).
He wanted to experience every thing, and he did. Fast living, beautiful women, make movies and developed new airplanes.
This film is only a snippet of his life. and that's too bad, because some of the very interesting things were left out.
What I Thought
Howard Hughes was taller than Leonardo DiCaprio, but he was able to capture his mannerisms.
Cate Blanchett appeared to have the same body build as Katherine Hepburn. Her face is quite different. If I closed my eyes I would have thought it was Katherine Hepburn talking.
DiCaprio and Blanchett were magic when they were on the screen together. I never knew they were romantically link until I saw this film, (I did know about her and Spencer Tracy.
The best scene was when Leonardo was teaching Cate how to fly.
John C. Reilly and Alan Alda played their scenes well. Alec Badlwin, the evil man, in this movie, was wonderful as the owner of Pan Am Airlines, and an enemy of Hughes.
The week link was Kate Beckinsale, who looked nothing like Ava Gardner, and didn't act like her at all.
Gwen Stefan had a short role, but she was a great looking Jean Harlow. I never knew Harlow was a bar waitress before she became a movie star.
I loved when the plane came right at us. In fact the photography was fabulous.
The Music
The music were song for the 1920's to the 1940's, and were classic songs, by Bing Crosby, Benny Goodman, the Memphis Five, Glenn Millar and Artie Shaw.
What I Wish They Had Shown
His marriage, to Jean Peters. She was his wife until he died, and no one knows if they ever lived together.
They never said that he surrounded him self with Mormons, (because he thought they lead a healthy life).
The movie hints of his mental illness, but doesn't delve into it.
I wish they had shown that he owned Trans World Airlines and Hughes AirWest.
Other Information
The film was released in December 2004, by Miramax.
It was Directed by Martin Scorses.
John Logan wrote the script.
It is rated PG, because of the sexual scenes
It takes about 2hours to watch it.
Thank you for reading my review.
