The Astronaut’s Wife

The movie is a revelation of the paranoia that Americans possess for the supernatural and space creatures. Johnny Depp plays the evil astronaut who has been taken over by some extraterrestrial creature and doesn’t remain himself. His lovemaking scene with his wife, at a party, reveals to his stunning wife that something is drastically wrong. OK, so he’s been possessed by a creature from space and is not the same old man his wife knew.

Charlize Theron is good in the movie and looks terrific. The movie is an age old classic about the misadventures of astronauts and space travelers. The two minutes that Alex, and Johnny Depp spend in space, in a black out, turn out to be the most eventful moments for the two. Alex and his wife die of unforeseen circumstances, reminding the main protagonist, the Astronaut’s wife, that she is next in line! She sees her future happening in front of her and by her instinct realizes that the man she loves has changed into a beast, taken over by alien creatures.

The climax of the movie is chilling with the possessed astronaut killing his wife’s sister, Nan, after which the wife is convinced that he has implanted some alien creatures in her womb. She’s terrified that the twins about to be born may turn out to be aliens.

She kills her husband, electrocuting him and he meets a watery grave, death by electrocution, while she survives to remarry and give birth to two normal boys, since the alien has been killed.

The film is good with convincing performances by Theron and Depp. The supporting cast, especially the FBI agent, does a good job too. The music is racy and melodic and the film succeeds in frightening its viewers, casting an eerie light on the suspicious goings on in NASA. A good weekend watch, but don’t take it to heart too much!
