Location: Thangavelu College is roughly 20 km from Chennai Central, located slightly off the OMR near Karapakkam. The college is on the highway and there are many buses plying on the highway. The college has its own bus service but the number of buses is very few. Some students travel by their own vehicle where as most use the MTC buses which is usually very crowded. Infrastructure:
Like most of the colleges on OMR, campus of Thangavelu too is huge. The campus is shared with T.J Institute of Technology. The college has decent labs with most of the equipment in working conditions. Classrooms are spacious and well ventilated. The college does have sports ground but not well utilized.
Hostel facilities are available but they aren’t clean. Overall condition of hostel is bad. Mess food is very bad. Students hate the food. Hostel charges are approx. 65, 000 a year. Fees:
About Rs 25, 000 per year. Faculty: The faculty here is not something students praise a lot about. Teachers keep changing and there are very few teachers who have stayed for long with the college. Most of the teachers are fresher who come here for experience and then leave it within a year or two. Mechanical department is worst affected by this. There are rumours that college doesn’t pay teachers well and hence they leave soon. Attendance and Discipline:
Every semester students are expected to attend for a minimum of 85 days. It also depends on how your department is, if they are lenient then there may be some relaxation in the minimum attendance. Overall the college isn’t as strict as many other Anna University affiliated colleges. Crowd:
The crowd comprises of most of the students from the area nearby. There are many students from Tambaram and some parts of Chennai. Few students are there from other parts of Tamil Nadu and absolutely no students coming from the other parts of the country. Canteen:
Canteen is just a small shop where only packed food is available. You can guess how the canteen must be. Festivals:
College does have an intra-college cultural festival which is the only activity taking place in the college. Unlike other colleges there are no symposiums in Thangavelu. In matters of extracurricular, this is a bit dull college. Placements:
College claims to have placed 90% of the students. When asked about placements to students they didn’t seem quite happy. There are mostly IT firms visiting the campus and no core companies. Average package offered to students stands at 2.5 LPA.
Some of the companies who have visited the campus are: Infosys, TCS, Wipro, CTS, HCL and many more.
