When I thought that all hope was lost and that I would have to end my life in this parched land, did I see an oasis. Oh! Sama….. Tere Bin Laden in the drop of rain in the Sahara, the morsel of bread in Somalia… Tere Bin Laden is the slap in the face to those Multi-Crore projects… Tere Bin Laden , about the fake Osama, is the real good stuff amongst the hundreds of fakers.
You might have got the drift of what I am going to say. Because after a long time, I am proud of a movie. All is not lost for real film makers. All is not lost for people who do not have the financial backing, who do not have a Johar or a Bhatt as a relative.
Tere Bin Laden is the story of a Pakistani journalist who dreams of going to America. Innumerable attempts later, he concocts a plan to earn big money to buy his way to America. He stumbles upon an Osama lookalike during a hilarious Rooster show and tricks him into taping a threat video. This creates a panic situation in the US, who send more troops into Afghanistan and a defense personnel to head investigations in Pakistan. What happens next is pure havoc. In fact what happens throughout the movie is pure, unadulterated havoc.
What the film cashes on brilliantly is the fear instilled in the minds of the Americans. Even a fake video, sparks off millions of dollars being poured into bombing the world. And it does not for a minute take itself too seriously. It’s no lecture – but it still drives in a point!
Written and Directed by Abhishek Singh, this movies strongest point is its screenplay and its dialogues. And this is no sleazy stuff like the likes of Priyadarshan / Rohit Shetty resort to, but its intelligent humour. Excellent dialogues both in Punjabi and Hindi; it’s satire at its best. Then you have the amazing performances by each and every character. There is not a single weak-link. Ali Zafar as the lead reporter or the brains behind the fake video, is extremely likeable. Yes, he has a few over the top moments, but then the movie itself is over the top. Piyush Mishra, as Majeed bhai is exceptional. But the man who takes the cake is Pradhuman Singh – the Osama look alike. His brilliant dialogue delivery and comic timing make this movie an absolute riot.
Though the production value of this movie is a little low, with a few glitches in the editing, what this film does not lack is the most important thing – Strong Writing and Brains. You could spend crores of rupees, but if you have a weak script – you are bound to fail. But if you do not have too much money, but your writing is water tight, then you can do wonders. Also, even if you do not have the world of resources, you can make do with the things you have; you just need brains. And this movie proves it. Even the music is apt. Shankar Ehsaan Loy do a very good job in giving Music which suits the film. Plus the PUNJABI accent of the actors add to the comedy.
All in all this is one movie you should not miss. This could get a cult following even if it does not earn crores. Encourage good film makers by watching such movies. I for one can watch it twice coz it’s a thoroughbred entertainer. For the guy who plays Osama…. Awesama.
