Songs to cheer you up...

I never thought I would write a review on songs other than in the genre of rock. But when not in the mood for metal or pshychadelia, we all sometimes like to lay back on the couch and play some soft, comfortable numbers to relax and cheer us up a bit, without taking a heavy toll on our eardrums. My effort in this review has been to try and recollect such songs which have a general cheering-up tendency and are also soothing, besides of course having good musical flavour. So here goes, in no particular order.

Ace of Base - All That She Wants

I heard this song a long time ago, and I liked it the first time I heard it. Ace Of Base is a two sister band, and this song is written about a woman who's present ambition in life is to have a baby.hence the song's peppy chorus goes All that she wants is another baby, she's gone tomorrow, yeah. All that she wants is another baby. The song has slowish beat and the main music accompaniment here is a strange bass-ish flute in the background. The voice of the female vocal is deep and ideally suited for this song. Listen to it to feel the mood.

Powderfinger - My Happiness

A girl recommended this song to me a couple of years back, and when I heard the song first I liked it for having that easy-on-the-ears quality that this review is about. It has guitars, drums, bass, vocals.everything, but is not harsh on the ears. The tempo builds up gradually to the chorus as the guitar chords pump in, and the feeling is one of joy. As the song says, it is about happiness, and is one of the happiest and peppy numbers I could find(peppy not as in Kaanta Laga). Definitely a song to bring a smile to your face. It gets my vote.

Natalie Imbruglia - Torn

The only Natalie Imbruglia song that I have heard, but after this song, I wish I had heard more of her.

The song starts of with a very nice acoustic rhythm, then the mesmeric voice starts and the drums roll in. The tempo will keep your feet tapping. The song is about a woman who has had a setback in her life, and the song states what she is going through. Very hummable song, but too difficult to sing as the notes are pretty high. Definitely one which shall relax you, and the chorus will lift your spirits.Extremely melodious, and the lyrics are very good.

Texas - Inner Smile

My introduction to Texas was through the video of this song I saw on MTV. Dressed as Elvis, she was dancing to the tunes of Inner Smile. A very peppy number, the beats are addictive and so is Texas's voice-it's just out of the world in this song. The music is just an accompaniment, but the tempo is the all-important factor which lifts your spirit.

Roy Orbison - Pretty Woman

An old favourite of mine. A very popular song, and one which everyone can sing along with. I've heard this song plenty of times and it never fails to relax me. The music and the drum tempo make this number very ear-friendly.

The Wonders - That Thing You Do

Made popular by the movie starring Tom Hanks which goes by the same name, this is one song which is extremely cheerful. The drum pattern is arranged to keep the song attractive so you can keep your feet tapping away. The vocals are good, and the backing vocals are very impressive and appear in the right places.

Def Leppard - Two Steps Behind

Walk away, if you want to.

It's okay, if you need to.

You can run, but you can never hide.

A very soothing song from Def Leppard. Essentially a soft rock number, this song will make you close your eyes and sing along. A love song, but this one is very relaxing. The chorus is addictive, and is what will make you play this song again and again.

The Mamas and The Papas - California Dreaming

This is a song I learned in school when I was in Class IV, and it is a gem of a song. Totally unlike any other song on the list. No peppy beats or fancy stuff, this two and a half minute song will blow you off by its sheer simplicity - amazing music and a beautiful flute solo in the middle of the song. Check out this song if you haven't already.

Maroon 5 - She Will Be Loved

A romantic song, but this song probably is the epitome of a song that goes easy on the ears. This is a song I heard recently but I liked it immensely. The voice of the male vocal is very melodious. The music lifts your spirits and the lyrics are meaningful as well. The chorus and its preceding verses are extremely melodius. Check out this song - it's one of the best new songs I have heard in the modern rock genre.

Air - Playground Love

Playground love is a soft number by French band Air(relax, it's in English). The song is very slow, almost psychedelic in nature. Just when you think it is, the saxophone drifts in and changes the mood of the song, which is essentially mellow. The vocals are eerie, and the only other instruments are drums, bass and piano. A very good song for those times you turn off the lights and lie down while listening to a song. Another must check-out for music lovers out there.
