My list of Overrated Film Personalities
Aug 28, 2007 06:10 PM 3895 Views

In no particular order since I feel most of them are overrated as much if not more, I give below my list:

  1. Sanjay Leela Bhansali - One of the most overrated Indian directors. I have no problems in people calling him a hit director etc etc. but to compare him with Guru Dutt is I feel the ultimate insult that can be heaped onto Guru Dutt. While Guru Dutt was all about subtelty and sensitivity, Bhansali is about loudness, garishness and gloss minus substance.

His khamoshi I don't remember. His HDDCS was characterized by loud sets and exquisite dance numbers. It took an Ajay Devgan (a wonderful but woefully underrated actor) to give depth to a movie which otherwise was just fluff. Devdas was loud, loud and loud.

The sets were loud, the actors were loud, the background noise was loud everything was just plain loud and resembled more a nautanki. Black was the ultimate. Black was adapting the nautanki in a western mileu and while the nautanki approach may have worked in Devdas in Black it felt all wrong.

But this man gets lauded as an auteur, for his vision etc. He is as shallow as they come and his work is testimony to that fact.

  1. Yash Chopra - Another director who after his initial films forgot about filmmaking and doesn't have a clue about making romantic movies. His idea of romance is limited to making the heroine dress in chiffons and look pretty at all times. He tried to push the envelope with Silsila but his obsession with prettification of the sets, the heroine and ultimately the story proved to be his undoing.

While his earlier films still had some kind of appeal he reached his nadir with Veer Zaara. I have never seen a more boring and plodding supposedly romantic movie with zilch chemistry b/w the leading stars.

  1. Hrithik Roshan - He exells in some movies and fails in others so I really wonder what the hype is all about. He is not a consistent actor. While he was good in Koi mil Gaya and passable in Krrish he was horrible in Mein Prem Ki Diwani and Yaadein.

I didn't particularly like him in Dhoom 2 also where I felt the villian as portrayed by him came across as too plastic and robotic without any depth. He still has to deliver a nuanced performance and yet he is being hailed as one the better actors. Hell Akshay Kumar who is a more well rounded and consistent actor and far superior to HR in terms of acting hardly gets that kind of praise.

  1. Preity Zinta - Her looks and her personality has bought her this far but how long do you keep portraying yourself in movie after movie. She got the plummest of assignments yet she failed to capitalize on it. Her last decent acting was in Dil Chahta hai. In KHNH in the initial scenes she went overboard.

In Veer Zaara she was very self conscious and kept trying to look pretty throughout and hence allowed Rani to walk away with acting glory. In SN it was Saif who did the acting while she did what she does best look cute.In KANK she was passable but somehow still not convincing. In Jaaneman she had to do nothing but look cute. In JBJ with the cuteness factor gone she stood out like a sore thumb among the other performers. And yet she gets lauded by the Indian media as one of the better actors of today. Huh?

So there.....
