They teach us to fight...
Jul 26, 2007 04:39 PM 7519 Views

Any sport is unique in that it is a proxy war.Two entities, individuals or groups fight to defend their turf, their superiority and pride. It is in this context that I talk of my top ten sporting heroes. They are all innovators, people who have constantly battled circumstances and constantly emerged victorious. When they have played they have stuck to rules and fought hard.We are able to learn from their determination, their singlemindedness and focus to become better human beings. Here they are:

1.Sunil Gavaskar(Cricket): When he played India was considered second class. It was due to his brilliance that the world noticed our cricket.

2.Baichung Bhutia(Soccer): From a small village in the hills Bhaichung made it, even internationally. In the process he lost none of his humility and niceness.

3.Vishwanathan Anand(Chess): The world champion in chess, Anand is the symbol of indian intellectual prowess.May his tribe increase.

  1. Geet Sethi(Billiards): A management graduate and an ace billiards player Sethi epitomises indian talent and merit.

5.Dhanraj Pillai(Hockey): Not only a great player but an articulate spokesperson for his sport. And very humble too.

6.Boris Becker(Tennis): Boom-boom Becker was the greatest showman in the history of his game and mercurial to boot.

7.Carl Lewis(Athletics): Mr Lewis had the skill, the perseverence and luck to break records. And he did create many records.

8.Ian Thorpe(Swimming): A breaker of astonishing number of records at a painfully young age.Amazing!

9.Lance Armstrong(Cycling):  The gentleman battled cancer to win the tour-de-france till he was tired of it.

10.Michael Jordan(Basketball): In sporting history no one else has been this prolific. He scored more frequently than any other slam-dunker ever beating even Karim Abdul jabbar's statistics.
