Jingle ads, jingle ads, jingle all the way..

Usually when I write about something thats not exactly a product, u can be sure that I got this itch all over me to write, but havent got anything worth while to write about:) Thats when I start scouring MS looking for anything that I can write about.

And so here I am.

Well, jingles are a very powerful way to etch something into peoples memory. Memory courses teach people to associate numbers or answers with rhymes or two liners. Let alone ads, how many of us still remember those old serials in Doordarshan, just because they had a really nice title score? I still remember the Humrahi theme song -

'Humrahi, Humrahi, yahee kahin par hai.hum dono ke manzil'

Ad jingles are even challenging to create.cause u dont have the time for an elaborate musical piece. It has to be short and yet powerful.

Well here are the some pieces that run into my memory - and hence its logical to assume that they are my favourites:

Mango Fruity

Mango fruity, fresh and juicy.

After I graduated from sip-ups at school, frooti was the main drink for me and my mates. The score is melodious and simple. The main thing about this Ad is that it is independent of the scenarios that need to be created to back it up. Cool work.

Nirma Washing Powder

Washing powder Nirma, Washing powder Nirma,

Doodh see safeedi kapdon main laaye,

Rangeen kapdon ka Dil le, dil le jaaye

Another of my school time jingles. Now, hailing from Kerala, I was pretty bad in Hindi in those days and I used to sing'rangeen kapdon ko dilli dilli jaaye'.

I used to think that Nirma was for white clothes though I didnt quite understand why it was asking the colored ones to take a walk to Delhi.

Philips

Yeh barosa, yeh saath tumhara, roshan jahan.

philips pe yakeen hamara, aisa bharosa aur kahan.?

Wonderful wonderful song.is this really just an Ad jingle? the lyrics and tune is so soothing, I wonder why nobody went on and made a full-fledged song out of it. They have this ad visual with family ties running in the background. Almost makes the product a part of a happy family. Nicely done.

Nescafe

How are things with you? Do I see u welcoming a smile?

lets sit and talk a while.in the one world of nescafe.

Well.if life were a bit more dramatic, im sure this would have been the best way to ask a beautiful girl sitting next to u at the library out for a coffee:)

Hutch

U and I, in this beautiful world,

green grass, blue sky, in this beautiful world.

The concept and the jingle are so well woven together. Kudos to the wonderful brains that weaved it together. One of the few ones in this list where the visuals are as good as the jingle.

Closeup

Kya aap close up karthe hain? Yah duniya se darthe hain?

Aap close up kyun nahin karthe hain?

Love the guy with his rakish clothes, love the guy with his hoarse voice, love the pitch. Funny. Think about the way products are marketed in todays world. For something like a toothpaste - u have an ad like this:)

Underlines the first commandment about advertising - Get the product into the consumer's head - how u get it in is not a matter. The end justifies the means. funny jingle.

Menthos

ek din jab laila roote, majnu ki kismath phooti

jab laila laga sathaane, tab manju lage manaane

ithne main tapka khota sikka

filmi style main bola voh: Rani.pani.

majnu ki gang main hui hulchal.

Majnu: Wait.thats my gal

Khota Sikka: Prove it!

lol.crazy funny ad.many that popped up after the success of closeup I think, but its was funny all the same. I love the khotta sikka guy. Cant blame him - laila is just too hot.

Pepsi

(Now im not fully sure about these lyrics - so im filling in some of them to fit in. I hope it right.)

Gumud gumud kai baadal garje

baadal garje - dil yeh bole thaare choole.

pyaas badi hai - aur bhi pee le.

Khol ke bandan, thod ke thaale

yeh dil maange moo-oo-ore.

jin jak, jin jak, jin jak, jin na.

jin jak, jin jak, jin jak, jin na.

The ad was with some kiddos playing cricket, all of them wearing tendulkar masks - until the maestro himself steps in, much to the delight of the kids. The tune and song is too cool. I also like the way they managed to weave the'yeh dil maange more' punch line so well into it. Very well done. One of the reasons I wasnt fully sure about the lyrics was that I hadnt seen it much. I think it was on air only for a short period of time. But I liked it a lot.

Airtel tune

Well.when A.R Rehman does something connected to music, you can be assured that more times than not it will be at the top of wherever it was intended to be. The Airtel tune is no exception. I think it was a stroke of genius from Airtel's marketing to associate with him and make it their jingle/ring tone. Just that I wish that they had also given him some words to compose. I am a sucker for well woven words:)

Tata Sumo

Now cant fully rate this as a jingle, but as I said - im a lyrics buff- whether there is a music associated with it or not. The wordings of Sumo and the corresponding visuals are just so well suited for the class and type of vehicle.

Anjaan nahin hain duniya daari se,

Phir bhi dil ke sunte sunathe hain.

Zindagi ke rahon main zimiddari tho aate rehathe hain,

bas kuch hi log unhe nibhathe jaathe hain.

They have done a pretty good research for this theme. They have associated a character and individuality to the vehicle and the class who drive them - Kuch log sumo chalathe hain.

Thats it folkies, my pick of the lot.

To paraphrase what they say: there are many things that go to make the complete ad, what u hum is just one of them.
