M M Kreem - A diamond in the rough.

I was leading a disgruntled life lacking interest in Indian music. Not merely because I became influential with other kinds of music but because of the fact that I could not contain Hindi film songs any more. The songs lost their melody, lyrics became just flashy and the scenes could not be watched. Music and noise could no longer be differentiated. But then, one fine day, summer rain poured out, soothing minds, healing wounds and quenching thirsty souls. The healing rain was music, something that gave so much peace and assurance that there is still hope for people like me who look forward to music for easing mind. That music was none other than the songs from the movie ‘Sur - The Melody of Life’. The creator of that euphony was none other than M.M. Kreem. It was for the first time that I noticed that such a great musician existed in our country and that discovery was delightful.

I don’t know how much success did Sur bring in box-office, as the movie didn’t have the essential elements most of today's community is looking forward ie, glamour, sensation etc. The music from ‘Sur’ of-course made a difference. I couldn’t stop myself, appreciating Kreem's music. The songs were distinctly separate from other songs, melodies which no one has ever heard before and the lyrics by Nida Faazli simply accelerated the effect. Lucky Ali who had been my all time favorite added to the charm with his lustrous voice. Suneedhi Chauhan’s voice was also new to me and her fresh voice just took me to air. Altogether it was a grand music feast. I don’t want to divert much from the main topic, praising Sur. The Sur effect is still so much there on me that I just can’t stop pouring praises about it.

I feverishly surfed the net to find out more details about Kreem's music and to my surprise, I found that many of my all time favorites, songs in movies like Criminal, Jism etc had been done by him. He makes music just is par with my taste. That’s all I can say. I checked out his recent film ‘Rog’. The music is equally good but some of the numbers like'Sufani' is not that pleasing to the ears and sounds hep(that’s how most people define it, when there is lot of noice) but I think he has would have tried to meet the movie requirements . ‘Paheli’ also has some of his good music apt to the movie requirements again. But when I look at those songs as a simple Kreem music admirer, I would say some of these songs are slightly different from his usual smooth and flowing style.

Although it is difficult to find out Kreem's best songs, I am making an attempt to catch out the 10 best out of all his other bests. And here we go .

Aabhija           (Sur)

Tu Dil Ki Khushi      (Sur)

Kabhi shaam dhale      (Sur)

Dil me jage dhadkan aise (Sur)

Awaarapan banjaraapan (Jism)

Jadoo hai nasha hai      (Jism)

Chalo           (Jism)

Maine dil se kaha      (Rog)

Dheere jalna      (Paheli)

Khaali hai tere bina      (Paheli)

It is very much unfortunate that a musician like Kreem has not been recognized properly among other musical giants in our country. I feel that film industry is too demanding for musicians like Kreem whom I feel is very unlikely to produce noisy music or so called hep music. They might have to compromise their styles to fit in to the movie scenarios and also they may be forced to make trendy numbers as well. I don’t think Kreem is not capable of bringing in such numbers, but then that goes too far from his style. Kreem has been able to produce music in his own distinguished style not even being touched or influenced by others music. He makes music outstanding from the rest of the world and that is his speciality.
