Yeah, it has come 90 revs late. I owe this to some of MSian rasikas of Illayaraja to whom I had promised to complete the 40th -50th songs. As this is a continuation of Maestro Illayaraja’s 50 best songs, I request you to follow the link of earlier revs for

*1-20  https://mouthshut.com/review/Ten_Best_Songs_of_Illayaraja-79455-1.html &

21-40 https://mouthshut.com/review/Illayaraja-80063-1.html.

*The musical journey of a Legend of Indian Film Music continues. It is not the number of songs that he has composed, but the shear quality of thread that goes into it, many of which have been done in matter of less than 30 minutes with a Genius of mind at work and translated on paper at the speed of lightning and the final output is just an outcome of following the chords with precision and perfection. That is why I rate him as one of the best Music directors in terms of BGM and undoubtedly the finest from India. BGM involves lifting up the scene may it be complete silence or pulling the audience into the emotive cauldron where no words or dialogues gain any prominence.

41.Malayorum veesum katru  -Paadu Nilave(SPB): Cool as the breeze from the Mountains, the melancholy in Keeravani raga will melt the hardest rocks and the listener too. Another song of his which runs close to this isEramana rojave sung by K.J.Yesudas.

42. Poove sempoove -Solla thudikuthu Manasu  (K.J.Yesudas)-Maestro’s masterpiece has many instruments mixed with aplomb and the gentle flute which mesmerizes you. If you want another floating music of the same kind with similar words, then it isSempoove song from Siraichalai(Kaala Paani)

43.Valai Osai Kala kala kala vena  -Satya(SPB, Lata Mangeshkar)-Had to pick this one for the simple reason that it is Lata for Maestro for the first time and the music simply overlaps her anomalous tamil accent with its fast pace. The starting notes with the jingle sets the mood of the couple with lovely flute to follow.

44.Unna nanachen pattu padichen -Aboorva Sagotharargal(SPB): One of the best lyrical pieces by Illayaraja for SPB with Kamal simply making everyone weep after watching the song.

45. Manguyile Punguyile -Karagatakaran(SPB, S.Janaki) Nagaswaram welcomes you and blends with Karagatam bringing the folk music to its best form of translation into cinematic excellence purely because of Illayaraja’s music.

46. Aagaya Vennilave -Arangetra velai(K.J.Yesudas, Uma Ramanan); The Maestro comes with his best songs and BGM for Fazil and this one is beautifully picturized and takes us back three decades.

47. Padi parantha killi  -Kizhaku Vaasal(SPB): All the songs in the movie and the BGM have extraordinary nativity blended in them which has heralded R.V.Udayakumar to give five big hit movies in short span of time.Another good song in the same movie is **Pacha mala poovu

48.Amma Enrazhaikkatha Uyir Illaye  **-Mannan(K.J.Yesudas): Is there any life on this earth which does not call its mother. A song dedicated to Motherhood with such melodious singing by Yesudas.

49.Thooliyile adavantha -Chinna Thambi(Mano);Illayaraja sits with P.Vasu for just 40 minutes to compose 8 gems which changed Vasu’s film career overnight. The best Raja year after 1982 had more then seven Mega hits purely because of his music.

50. Sundari Kanaal oru seidhi  -Thalapathi(SPB, S.Janaki): The same year Manirathnam was blessed with another Mega hit movie which had scintillating songs right from the foot tappingRakkama, the song dedicated to Raja’s mother-Chinnathayiand this out of the world song composed in RD.Burman’s studios in Mumbai. They were simply amazed to read the composition of this song.

51. Partha vizhi Partha -Guna(K.J.Yesudas)-The song I have picked above Kanmanibecause of the high pitch and beautiful rendition with classical overtures in paavani Raaga which has amazed one and all including Bombay Jayashree and Kamal himself.

52. Inji Iduppazhagaa -Devar Magan(S.Janaki) –simplicity to the core and clarity of song mix to give a mouth tapping beautiful song well etched to reflect the mood of the scene. The same song in Hindi by Chitra(Viraasat) fetched her National award.

53. O Butterfly –Meera  (SPB, Asha Bhosle): Well, a butterfly has many colours which are chiseled to give a rare blend of beauty. This song is a rare blend of beautiful music gifted by the Maestro to PC.Sriram for whom this one became the only stand point of his  movie.

54. Nalam Vaazha -Marupadiyum(SPB): Genius at work. The smooth flowing guitar, the interludes followed by the flute sums up the emotions of the Birthday girl and the wisher so skillfully with fantastic lyrics, one of my all time favourites of Maestro.

55. Ennai thalata varuvalo  -Kathaluku Maryathai(Harihran & Co): A hit song after a long gap when the murmurs where up and bang comes some lovely songs which you can hum whole day long.Anantha Kuyilin Pattu is another rapturous delight.

56. Nee Partha Parvai -Hey Ram(Hariharan, Asha Bhosle): Maestro’s magic at work, which I would have listened countless number of times, the piano and the violin interlude with Hariharan’s soaking voice and the hum from the lady Nightingle ought to be in my top five list of songs of all time.

57. Kajiraho Kanavilo  -Oru Naal oru Kanavu(Hariharan, Shreya Ghosal) Had to pick this one aboveKonji Konji song from Veera because of the freashness of the singers and the tune though has resemblance to two of his old numbers. Lyrics is by Pazhani Bharathi and the synth effect is good.

58. Ilankathu Veesuthe –Pithamagan(Sriram Parthasarathy, Shreya Ghosal):The starting note of flute and the choice of the singers is very astute with Raja’s affinity to air(Katru) is decades old and what comes out when the air blows gently is sweet melody.

59. Thenral vanthu theendum bothu  -Avatharam(Illayaraja, S.Janaki & Co): SinceJanani Janani missed from earlier lists, One song for Raaja was inevitable-the colour song for the blind, an expression of splendor chiseled into four beats and touching the heart gently

60. Unnai vida intha ulagathil  -Virumandi(Kamal, Shreya Ghosal): Song written by Kamal himself with touching slow tone and the background violin cannot get any better straight out of Raaja’s simplicity and nativity in the tune. I had to pick this one aboveBharathi songs.
