One of the most soft-spoken & serious personalities of Indian cinema history, Hemant Kumar always maintained his separate existence/identity. His music direction was as successful as his career as a singer. His best efforts as a music director include movies like *Sahib Biwi aur Gulam; Bees Saal Baad; Khamoshi(Rajesh Khana); Anandmath(Vande Mataram); Nagin(?); Anupama(Dharmendra, Sharmila) *. He never did the mistake of singing songs of his own movies that even C Ramchandra couldn't avoid.C Ramchandra has sung several songs(as Ramchandra Chitalkar) very well but they could have been a LOT better from Mohd. Rafi or at times say Talat.(Albela is a prime examaple).
Like Mukesh some of the songs were prob'ly born to be sung in Hemant Kumar's voice: *Ye nayan Dare Dare, Chhupalo Yun dil main pyar mera; Tumhara Intazar hain; Jag-E-Dard-E-ishq jaag *come to mind immediately.
There were two more singers that had very similar voice as Hemant Kumar(Subeer Sen & Dwidaj Mukergy?). *'Mazhil Wahin hain pyar ki raahi badal gaye, sapano ki mehafil main hum tum naye' * from Kathputali is from Subeer Sen I think.
Here is a list of 20 songs that I like the best from Hemant Kumar. I know the title is'10 best' as maybe the first requester didn't know enough songs of the great. I am not planning to include any explanation per song in here. I guess everyone knows the tune, lyrics or at least have heard them at least once. If not, I suggest as quickly as possible. (1) Ye Raat Ye Chaandani Phir Kaha han Sun ja Dil ki Dasatan
I was humming this song for next 15 days when I first heard it(3rd std?). Has a nice rhythm & peaceful qaulity about it.
(2) Chhupalo yun dil main pyar mera ke jaise mandir main low diye ki
Adorable song from Hemand Da.
(3) Ay Dil kaha teri mazhil, na koi deepak hain na koi taaraa, gum hain jameen gum aasaman
From Maaya? Again a little fast than usual song for Hemant Da.
(4) Teri Duniyan main jeene se achha hain ke mar jayen
A casual song for ultra-casual careless character like Dev Anand. He looks so happy sort in this song that can't understand why he wants to'Mar Jaye'! Actually this is not filmed in a sad sor of way.
(5) Hain Apana Dil to awaara, Na jane kis pe ayega
Hemant Kumar proves to be the ultimate voice for Dev Anand.
(6) Na Tum hame jano.Na hum tumhe jane magar lagata hain kuchh aisa mera humdum mil gaya
(7) Yaa Dil ki Suno Duniyawalo Ya muzhako abhi chup rehene do, Main gum ko khushi kaise keh du, jo kehete hain uanako kehene do

Almost the same tune as Nain Se Nain Nahi Mila

A mischievous song from Hemant Da. again for Dev Anand. Filmed in a very'majedaar' way!
