To all of those who read this, please bear with me if there are a couple of songs in Tamil and not available in hindi. In any case, Rahman has also started recycling songs from Tamil into Hindi.

On to the best of Rahman . no countdown, because I feel that it is an insult to both the songs and the music director to start ranking his songs. Instead I will classify his songs by various subjects.

Vande Mataram - India and its youth discovered the power of vande mataram, after the release of the album by Rahaman. If you want to just pick up one cassette of Rahaman, then go for Vande Mataram. The music is innovative and all the compositions are great. My favourite is Vande Mataram and Maa Tujhe Salaam

The rest of all of them can be classified into these categories

  1. Dance Tunes - Fast Music

After a slow start in Roja(Rukumani Rukumani), he staretd doling out dance numbers like Arabic Kadaloram(Bombay) and Chaiyya Chaiyya(Dil Se) and even the likes of Rubde(Thakshak). This is essentially a feet tapping song and is the first song to capture your attention in Rahaman's cassettes.  Some of the less famous but very popular ones include Chandrelekha(Thiruda Thiruda) and Muqabala Muqabala(Kadhalan), Hai Rama yeh Kya hua(Rangeela) Chiku Buku Raile(Gentleman)and Ramta Jogi(Taal. In Alaipayuthey, it was September Madham.

  1. Vareity - Theme Based

These include the types of Kuchi Kuchi Rakamma(Bombay), Yeh Hasseen Vadiyan(Roja) Ishq Bina(Taal). Here the song is very film centric, and is a fast one which is the second u will notice in the suit. These songs will always be fun centric songs and best represented by Jiya Jale(Dil Se). My favourite in this category will be the one from Roja and also Kadhal Sadugudu(Alaipayuthey) and Mustafa Mustafa(Duniya Dilwalo Ki)

  1. Individual Songs - Mainly heroinne focussed

Whats common between Choti Se Asha(Roja), Ho Gaye Rangeela re(Rangeela), kalluri Salai(Kadal Desam), Thiruda Thiruda(by the same title) and Kaathalikkum(Kadhalan). They are the intro songs and based mainly on the heroine(call it discrimination .!) and very few on the guys. Only in a few films the introuductory song is by both the hero and the heroine. These can also permeate into other categories like chaiyya chaiyya(Dil Se) into the first section

  1. Love Based - Explaining Love

Satrange Re(dil Se) explains the 7 forms of love, pachai neeram(alaipayuthey) sees loves in different colors. The same is the case with the likes of Kuch Bi naa socho(Bombay) and Tanha Tanha(Rangela). They are the soft romantics of the love between the 2 people. I think Yeh hassen vadiyan(Roja) is the best of the lot.

  1. Soulful Remderings  - Intimate and the best

These are the best work of Rahaman. It gets a lot of time to like this but once you like it., it stays with you forever. E Ajnabe(Dil Se), Roja Janeman(Roja), Kehna Hi Kya(Bombay) and the likes share this spot. They are the classics of Rahaman and stays with you longer. One of the best in this regard will be Snegidhane(Alaipayuthey) .

Themes bring the best out of Ar RAhaman. The proof lies in Roja, Bombay, Dil Se, Rangeela and countless films that owe a lot to Rahaman for their success.

This is one music director you cannot miss from your list of all time favouites .
