An antidote for mood swings

Note: This is not just a list of 10 songs that rocked this year… these guys watered the plants err… looked after my mood swings too.

Mood: Low ‘n’ Lonely

The Drug: Leaving New York - R.E.M.

When I left a place where I’ve stayed for five long years, I realised how the place had kinda grown on me, how the roads and people had adopted me, how I had failed to stay unattached… and how after 3 months, the new place still doesn’t feel home. But as Michael Stipe says, “It's easier to leave than to be left behind”

  • Now life is sweet

And what it brings

I tried to take

But loneliness

It wears me out

It lies in way

Elliptical lyrics, resonant tones and reflective videos make R.E.M. what they are. And this latest album, Around the sun, is a sure winner.

Mood:Eccentrophobia(I can’t quite define actually, though I suffer that all the time!)

The Drug: What you waiting for - Gwen Stefani

Echo-pedals, Harajuku girls, circular mind illusions, flying pink pelicans, funny bunny costumes, alice in wonderland, smoke forming Japanese alpha, shadows in water, invisible ink writing on paper, chair rotating in mid-air, writer’s block; born to blossom, bloom to perish…

Girls don’t always like sugar n spice n everything nice. Reality bites.

Tick-tock, tick-tock

Look at your watch now!

You're still a super hot female!

You got your million-dollar contract!

And they're all waiting for your hot track!

What you waiting for?

Power-packed, as fresh as it is retro and as progressive as feel-good music.

Mood: Mush-mush-mush

The Drug: Sand in my shoes - Dido

Two weeks away it feels like the world should've changed, but I'm home now and things still look the same. I think I'll leave it till tomorrow to unpack and try to forget for one more night that I'm back in my flat to the real life where I can't watch sunset. Tomorrow's back to work down to sanitation

Yeah man! A dream man, a dream holiday, a dreamy trance…

I've still got sand in my shoes, and I can't shake the thought of you

I know we said goodbye, but I wanna see you again

Mood: I-wanna-say-Oh oh oh oh!

The Drug: In the shadows – The Rasmus

I haven’t really paid attention to the https://lyrics. These guys look like Greenday(Oh btw, greenday’s come up with a new single, saw it once, but didn’t hear it) with electric guitar n weird hairdos. This ‘rock’ kinda song really rattles me, its so infectious, I used to find it so annoying that it drew my attention and from then, I’ve kept listening.

Mood: I’m-a-mixed-bag!

The Drug: Musicology - Prince

Prince is back from his frequent weird obsessions with a concussion of jazz-R&B-fusion that’s relatively fresh and one of the very few tracks of his that I like.

Mood:  Let’s-dance-baby!

The Drug: Yeah – Usher

I just have to faintly hear it. I cant stop myself from … you know what. It’s the best thing to start with on a Saturday night. Ludacris' rhyme+ the not-so-usual-Usher's vocals= Yeah(man)! And that’s what makes the album ‘confessions’ a one song album.

Mood: Feel-good

The Drug: Afrodisiac - Brandy

Truly(progressive) R&B, truly Brandy.

Catchy, infectious, sassy, thumping, soulful and very much hummable. The rhythm is offbeat and does have a slice of the Caribbean influence and a flavour of Aalliyah. I personally love humming the chorus part when I’m at work;)

Mood: Don’t-just-sit-there-do-something!

The Drug: – All nite -Janet Jackson

Being the R&B Junkie that I am, I quite like the whispery voice of Janet in this track. Fast-paced, foot tapping but not loud. And she looks good too(not that it bothers me, but anyway;)

Mood: Freaking-friction!

The Drug: Lose my breath - Destiny’s child

Yeah! The girls are back together. Loads of bootylicious stuff, destiny fulfilled! More of the group and less of Beyonce is not bad at all. Typical Destiny’s child kinda song. Final word – I like it!

Mood: It-takes-two-to-tango!

The Drug: Tilt ya head back - Nelly & Christina Aguilera

Christina looks bad and gives her ‘moulin rouge’ kinda screeming. If it sounds as if this song shouldn’t belong here in this list… check it out for Nelly, he’s one of the best of the hip-hoppers around.

Mood: Move ‘n’ shake

The Drug: Let’s get it started – Black eyed peas

BEP just rocks! Err… no hip-hops! Very urban sounding and funky with a mix of latin, hip hop, reggae and pop. And full of energy.

Yeah man, its 11 and not 10, I can’t count!

Kevin Little humming ‘turn me on’ kinda bored me to death, and I can’t really choose from one those numerous other dance tracks like ‘Don’t be shy’, ‘Sunshine’, Superstar’ and ‘Milk shake’. Alicia Keys’ not my type of music, Eminem’s video’s great but the song’s just not upto his real slim shady standards, Robbie Williams is planning to hang himself and the year’s gonna end!

And, I guess I will be killed because I haven’t included Beyonce’s Naughty girl in my list. So that’s Number 12 for you. Dedicated to …;)
